Wind, origin or direction

How do you call it? A west wind "to me" is blowing west. And a right wind is blowing to the right. I ran into a guy that was saying a west wind was its origin and it was blowing to the east. Mike

^^^ +1 ..... Origin
Just as a weather forecast, the origin is what is given.

Origin. That's how us sailors call it. To avoid confusion on the firing line I will sometimes call "right to left wind, half value, 5-7" or what ever like head wind or tail wind. Value call is for angles from the 4 compass points (muzzle always pointed 12 o'clock, so half value would be a 45° angle)

Origin. If I was facing due north and had a wind blowing from 90deg to my right, it would be originating from the east and thus an east wind.
Agreed, origin. That's what I have setup on my ballistic calculator. It offers direction but that would be confusing.

Officially, you call it the direction it is coming from.
A west wind is blowing west to east.

Actually, a half value wind would be coming from a 30 degree angle (ie. 11, 1, 7, or 5 o'clock) with respect to the muzzle. The wind is your friend....so is trigonometry:)

Mathematically yes, but most shooters I spot for can't read a 2mph difference in wind anyways, so calling anything from 30°-60° a half value (caveat, under 1000 yards and shooting steel) usually gets close enough.

Occasionally I get a good shooter (Olin on here was one of them) who I can give really accurate wind calls to and they will agree/disagree.

I don't think I can read a 2 mph difference. I shoot 100/200yd BR for score and decided to buy my own flags this year. Still lots to learn....hard to imagine shooting without them now.

This is why you should use the clock for reference and not a weatherman's terminology. Reading a 2mph wind takes experience, practice and reading the wind with a reliable meter. Full value is at 3 and 9, 75% is at 10, 2, 4, and 8, and 50% is 11, 1, 5, and 7. And 6 and 12 definitely have an effect depending on wind velocity and how hard it's hitting on the face! After shooting for 50 plus years, nothing is exact but this is close enough to exact! I do precision guesswork based on years of questionable knowledge gathered from unreliable resources :cool:!!

I used to make my living by being able to read the wind, I raced sailboats professionally. Seeing a 2mph velocity change and a 10° direction change as verified by onboard electronics was an essential skill for a bowman.
