Wind Flag Types

Might as well post a pic of mine.
They're all fiberglass rather than coroplast..very light yet durable. The pinwheel, while it seems rather simple, actually is the best shape possible for a daisy, imho. Being very light, it poses virtually no gyroscopic effect and it doesn't direct wind into the vane.
Lots of work and thought goes into this design but they perform.
Not sure how much detail shows in the pics but if you study on them a bit, you can see a lot of labor in making the hardware. The pinwheel comes off easily for transport.
I get fiberglass in big sheets, apply the vinyl and cut it all by laser.

Pics coming...
Colors washed out a little in the bright sun but you get the idea. Also, the orange disc on the back of the pinwheel offers some of what a ball does in a headwind. Head a tail winds are toughest for most flags to show well.

I haven't figured out how to make them 100% honest. All flags lie, it seems. Lol!
Mike, its not that they lie it is we don't see whats coming instead of what they're showing.
Bottom line, often by the time we react to what we see something else is coming to change the impact.

Will your flags fit onto a light stand tripod which is 1/4"-20 thread i believe?

Also do you have a recommendation on how to pack and transport them?

Thanks

Yes sir. I can furnish adapters for your 1/4-20 stud or I also make poles and this case. Keeps everything together and I can walk downrange with everything in one hand.

The pole in the above pics is a tripod pole but I make spike and tripod bases for them. The tripods are awesome..best I've seen. They're heavy and wide enough to be very stable. Spikes are most stable but the tripod is good to about 6ft tall in 20-25mph wind without being staked down and they collapse down for transport. They have a leveler on one leg.

The poles will accept either style base, spike or tripod. Tripods are popular in rimfire but you seldom see them in cf. Most rf ranges are nice and flat, so a pole doesn't need to be very tall at most places. Just the opposite at many cf ranges. I can make poles from about 4ft tall up to 21 ft.

I use Teflon for making the adapters. Nice and slick! Actually better than any bearings I've seen:)

You're right, Dave. The flag does what the wind makes it do, where it's at. We all blame the flags when shots go into unexplained places but there is always a reason. We just don't always like the truth. Lol!

Heres a typical wind flag arrangement at a benchrest match. 99.8% daisy wheels keeping the wind blowing. Shooters know to use the daisys for angle and speed but use tails for letups and pickups. View attachment 1205661

Dusty, that's obviously not our range. Not only is there too much grass & too many trees, the real giveaway is that all the flags are pointing in the same direction! :p

So mike can you post a pic of how your stake setup is with your pole since most would want that over a tripod and also what would it take to replace a daisy with your pinwheel?

I’ve seen everything but the tails and I really like the pin wheels. I’d hate to put up a 21’ pole for a wind flag........:eek::eek:

To add to what Dusty said, do you offer the flags in more than one size or are they the same dimensions as what @JMayo is showing in his picture? Thanks.

Hi buddy!
This pic shows a tripod on the pole but a spike beside of it.(above) Nothing to it...they both swap by screwing one off and the other one on. The spike has a step peg on it. You can beat them with a hammer if you want but a cordless drill is a lot smarter tool to carry down range when the ground is hard. I think hammering them in the ground is a carryover from before we had cordless tools. I simply can't think of a single reason to beat your stuff up to get them in the ground, otherwise. I often bring a drill holster and a drill with a masonry bit to pre drill the hole where needed. Works just as well or better and I'm not beating on my stuff..and it's in a holster so my hands are free.

As for replacing a daisy with the pinwheel...I can't really answer that one as most every flag is different in how it's made. I can tell you that my pinwheels are not the $3 garden daisy variety. That's where most of my time and money is in my flag. It's just not viable to most people to do what you're talking about, imo. In short, the pinwheel assembly is $45 vs the whole flag for $65.

Where there's a will, there's a way and I've sold them to people with your intentions but it's not really that simple and you'd have to figure out how to adapt them to your flag. It can be done but at a cost.

The good thing is my pinwheels virtually never tear up unless you shoot them or something. Not like a garden daisy that breakes if it blows over or just simply falls apart after a while.

Flags don't have to look alike but they can't show red in a green condition...period. Pretty much anything else can work, believe it or not.

I sell a bunch around the SE and I shoot next to both often and have never heard a complaint about the yellow.. It just works and it shows up better than any kind of green.

That said...there is no perfect color for everybody. I never dreamed how many people are color blind to some degree until I started making flags. It's amazing! A ton of people don't see certain colors like the rest of us do! Yellow and black is the most popular color combo amongst those people! As a commercial flag builder I see things that most of us take for granted. I can do custom colors but they will take a while and it costs extra. I prefer not to do them but I try to accommodate those folks when I can. The sport needs every shooter we can get to participate.

My flags are really good! You should try some. I've sold about 3,000 or so and absolutely have not had a single person to take me up on the satisfaction guarantee. That says more than anything else I can say about them.

Yarnell; one of my favorite ranges is the Range at Shelby County Deer Hunters at Port Washington, Ohio east of Sidney. You need those 21-22 foot flags for the 200 yard range as you are shooting over a small valley and creek. You keep the flags up with guy twine. It is fun setting flags.

Every place is different. My spike type poles have a 8" long 1/2" round spike on them. I've been shooting for years and have set them in mud and standing water. Not saying they can't blow over but I've never, ever had one go down yet. It could happen at the next match but I doubt it. I don't even think about it anymore.

And I’m one of them. The military eye doctors called it “Shade Blind.” At least, that’s what they told me. I’m sure there is a $100 name for it. During my time in the Army, they tested my eyes for Delta Force recruitment. They showed me 9 color charts (large cards) with different color dots all over them. The colors showed letters or numbers. Sounds simple, but the only one that I could see was the red and green card. So, When I get them, I’ll need black and yellow.

It seems most common that reds and greens both look grey. That's gotta be tough in this game! Black and white or bright yellow have a lot of contrast to all of us but the common colors, not so much.

I'd be happy to be of help, just understand that I do flags in batches of about 200 at a time and leade time is mostly about where I am in a run. I put the vinyl on the fiberglass sheeting, first thing. There's no way to suit everybody with color options and I use the best(and most expensive) vinyl I can buy. I usually have my std yellow, green and oranges, as well as black. Other colors may take even longer but I don't mind helping a fellow shooter get what he can see. I think I might have some black and yellow flags done hat were never claimed, fwiw. I think there are 4 here.

While on the subject of colors, I was also diagnosed with a stage of color blindness while in the Army, U.S., With that being said, for those who decide to try their hand at building their own flags, I’d also say to color them to suit your needs and background. Green may not be the best color if you are shooting over the grassy knoll. You can also make the flag more visible with a different color for your tails.

Green and orange look a lot alike to my eyes, partial colorblindness runs in the family. Florissant Pink and the Safety worker yellow works best for me. Pink sailtails. :D:D:D
