Wind flag stands?

What are you all using for wind flag stands? I was thinking of using a tripod I have hear but cant seem to get the swivel head off it:( Also thinking maybe a music stand? Would the tripod be better as it can be leveled? Also do most of the camera tripods have a removable swivel head?

Thanks

Do a search on the forum. I use B&H Camera Supply in NYC. They have light stands in several price ranges. The smart thing to do is to buy some Giotto? ball swivels for them. It allows you to make sure your flags are plumb and square. They preform much better that way.

There is a lot of ways to make wind flag poles. Some have used extendable paining handles, or gold ball retrievers. The problem I have seen with these is when extended they have a friction lock, and when the wind is violently switching back and forth they have a tendency to become unlocked and un-extend.

The simplest way I have found it using EMT or electrical conduit. Either weld or have someone weld a spike to the outside, and you have a great flag pole. One range that holds NBRSA registered Benchrest match's I shoot at has a big dip and take a 25 to 30 foot pole for wind flags at 200 yard. I made poles out of EMT, and welded a 1/4 inch piece of angle iron on the side, and cut it off at 5 inch's. I drove it into the ground, and with my poles extended up 30 feet with flags on them withheld 60 + MPH winds, as hurricane Sandy came in during our match. I seen a few flags fall that day, and some even had guide wires on them to hold them up.

I use various sizes of EMT, and use a coupler to make the extensions. I place a thumb screw in the top of the coupler, and use a smaller piece of tubing. The works well, as I have said they will stand up to the highest winds around.

Mr Lambert: What kind of fitting is on the top of those light stands from the factory? Do they use a stud or something else? Is a stud what size and thread are they ?

Thanks
