Winchester?

Do any of you know much about the Winchester model 70? I was wondering about accuracy from the factory and so forth...any comments would be appreciated. A friend offered one up cheap,he seems to be broke) its in .270 and I could use it. It's in the factory synthetic stock stock and it looks like new...so I'm thinkin about adding it to the collection.

The Winchester mod70 Is a nice rifle however it lacks the barrel tenon design of the Remington 700 which completely encapsulates the cartridge so In my opinion accuracy will suffer slightly. The trigger is not great from the factory and needs some adjustment to be perfect but there seams to be plenty of aftermarket parts for it. One of the features of the mod70 is the massive claw extractor and controlled round feed which is nice if you are operating the bolt real fast. In a controlled round feed the bolt picks up the cartridge after striping it out of the mag and holds onto it so it will not jam if you short stroke the bolt or operate the bolt freaky, for lack of a beater term. Overall it is not a bad rifle and .270 is a nice caliber.;)

"B"...

Stop it, or I'll report you to your mommy, and keep you after school!

What you said is pure BS.

The M70 is fully capable of fine accuracy - there are many 1,000 records that stand, that were shot with the M70.

Now... go to your room!

Model 70s...

Pre 1964s are classics and state of the art for its period.

1965-1969 Model 70 went through three basic changes an in many folks opinions not for the better.

mid 1969-2006 model 70s made few changes, mainly stock and price) until Winchester in Hartford closed.

Mid 2007 until now made in the FN plant just outside of Columbia SC. Better machined due to CNC technology, Price has again gone up.

Books have been written about the model 70. They have been one of the mainstays for factory American rifles. Several companies have made clones of the model 70 with some refinements.

what is "barrel tenon design"???????? cliffe

They are referring to the way the end of the Remington 700's barrel is cut to allow the bolt head to be inside the chamber, or ring of steel as Remington calls it....
Not sure about it being totally encapsulated though
I use a lot of custom actions that don't have that, and just use a coned bolt with no problems.
Of course I'm careful with overloads too........

I sold my Remington PSS and am now using a Winchester stealth, both are .308. The Winchester is shooting circles around the PSS. They both have the HS stock, same barrel contour, ect, but that Remington spent alot of time at the gunsmith trying to get it shooting well, like bedding, crown, speedlock, trigger work, ect,it always shot pretty good but not good enough).
The Winchester recieved a bedding job, and trigger work. I had it for 2 weeks and shot it in a HBR match, it shot a 240-6x with me having a few issues of my own. Not bad for a factory rifle.
