Winchester WSSM Action?

What on earth can this thing be used for. I have one with a magnum bolt face and the action is so short it can really only be hand fed for most anything other than the ultra stubby WSSM cases. I don't want to sell it because ill take a huge loss on it. Just curious if anyone has had one of these and done something with them.

Very Respectfully Submitted

Nothing wrong with single shot actions, it's my preferred action style. Matter of fact, I am known at one local gunclub as "singleshot" :)

There was an article in Varmint Hunter magazine a year or so back about a guy that had one chambered in a 30 cal variant, he called it the 30 BR mag, had a bit higher than a 308 capacity, he never mentioned velocities but supposedly they were over 3k with the 155.

How about you turn it into a 6.5 WSSM? A great little target round and good for hunting as well.

I second that. Great little round. Pretty efficient. Mine only uses 45.7 gr. of 4831SC to push the 140 gr. Berger VLD Hunting bullet about 2860 fps.

Anyone know where to get WSSM brass these days?
25 WSSM brass is hard to get hold of now but 243 WSSM brass seems to be more available. If you want to use a 25 WSSM (or 6.5) you might have to neck up 243 WSSM brass.

I sold my 223WSSM rifle as it was terribly inaccurate with its' large chamber. I have 200+ WW cases but the neck is thick and too inconsistent to do much with them. My gunsmith was thinking of expanding it to 6mm, turning the neck then making a tight chamber such as my 6PPC. We just do not want to spend the money on a reamer. If anyone has tried something like this, please let me know. Naturally any rifle would be single shot.

My 6.5 is using both 243 and 25 WSSM brass necked up and neck turned so the neck thickness is similar to most cartridges out there. The weight variation in the 25WSSM brass was very close, the 243 brass not so close but still good. The reamer suits the dies available and they size the brass down just enough. I have heard some people complain about WSSM brass but I like it once it is neck turned, tough as nails. The brass I am using was fired maybe 10 times each in my first barrel and twice now in my new barrel and is still shooting well in my F Class gun.

I had a 70 Stealth in 243WSSM which presented the same problem when the barrel was shot out - which didn't take long. In my three year ownership, I acquired a deep and lasting dislike of the WSSMs, their brass, performance, and concept! So, rebarrelling it in the original or another WSSM wasn't an option!

Instead, I gifted it to a hobby gunsmithing friend who bushed the bolt-face and rebarrelled it to 6mm BR. It performed superbly still in the original stock, and is still in use some five years on with another member of my rifle club. As he's a member of the GB BR short-range team and is one of the UK's leading lights in our (rather small) bench rest shooting fraternity, he is no easily impressed plinker. He got it to shoot only slightly larger 6BR groups than in his mid-range custom 6mm rifles.

Laurie,

I'm curious how well the 6br fed in modified WSSM action?
I've given up trying to get one to feed reliably in a 700.

Single-shot only. Yes, they're devils to get them to feed well. We have a gunsmith here in the north of England who has devised ways of making them (and various other short, odd shape cartridges) to feed 100% reliably from Remy 700 and Tikka T3 short actions. I reckon it's given him a lot of business over the last few years.
