Thanks. First time I’ve had it out of the oil bag in 4-5 years. Stock’s been ready. Just mulling over which caliber. That’s the nice start, nice action
need a set of switch barrels. Too many good/cool cartridges not to shoot 'em all! Thanks. First time I’ve had it out of the oil bag in 4-5 years. Stock’s been ready. Just mulling over which caliber.
This is a long action. See picture 61 where it shows the bolt against a long bolt stop to keep it from coming too far back for a short cartridge and the short magazine follower for the .222 ctg. I had one of these and it was a real shooter and one of the few rifles I regret selling.
Winchester serial numbers post ‘64 are confusing. G and seven digits, coupled with heavy varmint, likely mid/late 90s onward. I have a 223 receiver from that era, G228xxxx. And a rebarreled 223, G221xxxx. Matte blued receiver and stainless barrels; my 6br is in the back of the safe, it was a 308, from the same era, likely same type serial.
To add confusion, when Winchester re introduced the “Classic” action, those had shorter serial numbers. Like Gxxxx or Gxxxxx. I’ve had several. Some of those early Classics had some pretty stunning wood, AA or AAA grade.
Some of my HV series with the matte receiver and SS heavy barrels are in the G217 range. IMO some of the info published by Win is suspect, so who knows?

I had one just like this one in 222 that I purchased new in about 1980, it was one of the most accurate out of the box rifles I ever owned (at least until I discovered Tikka). The little 222 cartridge sure did look funny laying in that big long action though.one of the few rifles I regret selling.
