Winchester Win 70 in 222/223?

I was wondering if there are any with some Winchester 70 knowledge here..

From what I understand, the Post-64 actions, are usually called XTR. And all of these where built on Long actions with blocked out magazine for 222/223.

However, they did apparently changed this and made a Short action in 222/223 in the 80s, before they then restarted the ‘’Classic’’ line. Is that correct?

I want a Win 70 in 222, with the simple trigger and 3 point safety, but would prefer a short action, instead of Long action.

Is there a way to differentiate the short lived Short action compared to long action? By looking at photos, and not asking every seller to measure action lenght :) :)

I don’t have all the catalogs, but do have a good many. In the mid/late 90s, I see 222 Remington offered in push feed configuration in the heavy varmint series. It would be a short action with the lever trigger. The barrel would be marked like this, with 222 vice 223.

I’ve seen a few HV 222s through the years, but not often.

I’ve only seen less than a handful of the SA M70 223’s. Very cool little rifles. I believe all the ones I saw were stainless but I’m not 100% on that. Neat little rifles, I always wanted one too.

I bought a M70 223 in 1992 - think it was called the heavy varmint. Came with a black synthetic stock - don't recall now whether it was from H-S Precision or ?? But the bbl had a grossly oversized chamber - fired brass came out of the chamber with wildly expanded cases ahead of the boltface counterbore. So dealer sent it back to Winchester, and when it came back, the chamber on the new bbl was eccentric to the point where when you rolled a fired case across a countertop, it was very obvious that the case body was - shall I say, lumpy? My local gun shop sold several of these rifles - lucky me, I got the one lemon and then another lemon bbl after the first one was replaced by Winchester.

A few years later, after I'd gotten a ffl license, I bought myself a M70 Stealth, which was very similar to the Heavy Varmint. This one shot pretty darned good, even though there were some goofy-looking lands out at the muzzle. It was advertised as having a 1-9tw bbl, but when I measured it with a tight-fitting patch on a rod with good bearings in the handle, it turned out to be 1-8.3tw. Obviously, Winchester's QC was in the toilet by then...

I kept that Stealth, and even though the factory bbl didn't shoot bad at all, I had a PacNor match grade 1-7.5tw 4-groove bbl that I thought was a good candidate to replace the OEM one. It's heavier, and I finished it at 27", but after using a 223 match reamer on it, I've got a rifle that shoots good, has a nice trigger, and works well for introducing new shooters to whacking steel at 600yds.

post 64 guns were very good imo from the mid 70's on fit finish and accuracy wise. the XTR changes came in 1978. i have a mint one in .270 cal. all the things some love to hate like white line spacers. the blueing is a lustrous almost black on highly polished metal. A striking rifle imo.

I see the Carbine Short Actions from time to time, in 223. On rarer occasions a Featherweight.

When the New Haven plant closed, and FN took over, after a bit they produced some 223s. I haven’t seen many on the market. Don’t believe very many were made and or not for very long. If memory serves they had a 9 twist.

If you can find a M70 Stealth in .222 pay the price and buy it. I shot my first 2 years of IBS with one. The only thing I did was install a Jewell trigger. Every match for those 2 years I beat multiple ppcs. They had a 1 in 16 twist, printed on the hang tag on the trigger guard. Dumb me sold it when I bought my first ppc.

Winchester short actions came out in 1985. Mine was in a .222 Rem. They also came in .223, .243 and .308 Not sure if there were other cartridges they chambered them in, But, I do know those were. My three best groups ever were shot with that. .222. They were .013", .018" and .019". Never achieved those kind of groups again. But, Damn, that was a fine shootin' rifle. Should never, ever, have sold it. (there was a story)

I have a Winchester M70 Heavy Barrel Varmint in 223 on its third barrel. Also a 308 in same configuration. Both short actions and produced in early to mid 90’s and both great shooters. HBV’s were produced in 222 but are hard to find. HBV rifles had the same simple M70 triggers as the pre-64’s

There is a 223 bolt face LA bolt on ebay. it was described as SA, i bought it, had to send it back. decent bolt too. I have 2 SA and one LA M70. one of the SA is a 223, one of my favorite rifles.

Lol,..I had the same one. FFL notified me there was a recall due to the large chamfer by the chamber. Replacement barrel could only muster 1 1/4" groups. Sent it down the road and picked up another 700 BDL varmint. My one and only new M70.
