Winchester thread pitch ?????

Hello
Getting ready to thread a barrel for a Winchester 70. I am pretty sure the thread pitch is 1" 16 but would like to check to make sure.
Thanks

If you have the action with you, you have your answer. If threading and chambering a barrel without an action and bolt in hand is bad juju in my opinion. Not starting trouble, just talking from experience.

I should have said: FN produced rifles. I had heard good things about the FN rifles, I just have not had any experience with them.

Slightly off-topic, but I have seen FN M70 clones with both 1"-16 tpi, and a much finer pitch as well. I can't remember exactly what it was, but it was somewhere around 24 tpi.
I read somewhere the Winchester 70's in the short magnums are 1-1/16"-16. Never have seen one, though.

I've thought the FN Patrol Rifles I've shot did pretty well for being "factory" rifles. I used a couple of those FN actions a few years back when they were available. Haven't seen one in quit awhile now. They had 1"x 16tpi tenon threads.

In the last 3 yrs, I've pulled the barrels off of 2 Classics and 1 push-feed. All 3 were 1" x 16 tpi. I haven't thought about any changes that FN might have made, so like Wapiti, I don't know if the tenon diameter and/or thread pitch has changed.

When Winchester started chambering for wsm & wssm cartridges, actions started showing up with 1.062x28tpi threads. I'm not saying they are all that way but I know some were.
I have pulled some F/N built Winchester's apart and found the same 1.062x28tpi on them to.
All the old ones that I've seen have 1.00x16tpi.

You should buy a thread pitch gauge...

I've done a couple of FN actions and they were both 1"-16tpi. Seems like I did hear something about some "bastard" threads in the Win. actions but can't remember what they were. May well have been something with the WSM's or WSSM's and trying to get just a little bit more steel in the front ring.

Just to confirm, I just checked an extra 25wssm barrel I have, off a mod70 coyote, and it measures 1.056 x 28tpi. I assume that is just a tad undersized from nominal 1 1/16 x28. I don't know if it is just the wssm actions that are larger and finer threads or not.

I did read somewhere awhile ago though that the wssm actions were done with a finer thread, that way the minor diameter of the female threads in the receiver would be less, and therefore have more material in the receiver to handle the extra chamber pressures that the wssm cartridges need...? Yes, this second paragraph is all internet hearsay and I cannot remember where I read it.

If you dont know the pitch of a thread in an action you can squeeze a peice of soft lead into the thread makeing an impression and check that with a pitch guage
