Winchester Mod 70 Heavy Varmint. 308

I am looking at Winchester M70 Heavy Varmint in .308. Kevlar stock, blue receiver, stainless barrel. Anyone has experience with those? How do they compare to Remington 700 rifles in similar configuration? Thank You.

If it's a Stealth buy it. I started benchrest shooting one in.222 it was very accurate Know guy with one min .308, he broke some club records with it.

That is when they made them. If it has a bedding block I believe it is a Stealth. If your not interested send me a PM as to how I can contact the owner.

Ditto on the accuracy of the Stealth M70. I have a .308 Stealth II with CRF and it has shot a 1/4" 5-shot group with factory 155 A-Max Match. I can't do that every time but it always shoots 1/2" or better with that ammo. My son has a Stealth I which is push feed and it shoots very well, too. These still have the original style trigger IIRC, much better than the MOA in later models IMO.

I know Stealth. It is not Stealth. This is HEAVY VARMINT marked gun with BLK Kevlar stock , blue receiver and stainless heavy barrel.308. Made in 1995.

I’ve had several. Buy it.

Im not seeing many over the past few years, and when I do, the prices are creeping up more. I did see one go recently on GB in 22-250. I meant to bid on it but got distracted at work and forgot about it. It sold for 550

The heavy varmints were known for accuracy. I have the 223 and 22 250 and my dad has the 222, they all shoot great. The original heavy varmints were all black with stainless barrels from the 90s if I’m right there was 5 different calibers made.

I have a HV in 220 Swift. Very good shooting rifle.
They were chambered in 222,223,22-250,220 Swift,243, & 308.
A thread from Rim Cent. post #7 has some info:

HV was the predecessor to the Stealth. Wilson barrel, very good rifles and rare to see for sale these days. If the round count and price is right, these are nice pieces. IMO, better than the Stealth as the Winchester CM button barrels shoot good but I can see the tooling marks in the lands in mine. ( that said, shots great at 3000 rounds, before I cut it back).

I use to have one of every caliber offered, all of them shot exceptionally well! im a big Remington heavy barrel fan too, at least the older ones. My brother was wanted a Varmint rifle and tried talked him into a Remington, he went ahead a bought the Winchester. When I saw the groups he was getting I bought one too, great rifles.

Had my barreled action cryogenic at 300 below. No drift after this. Winchester 308win heavy varmint model from 90's. Shoots .5 to .75 moa.

Old post but have to re-ignite. I owned a Win 70 HV 243 years ago but sold it to a friend (who's never shot it). I visited a gun shop today and handled a Win 70 HV 308 with a black barrel. I gather this is what you refer to as a "Stealth" model although there is no Stealth marking, only "Heavy Varmint" on the barrel. My 243 had the SS barrel. Very tempted and re-igniting this thread for additional feedback. I shoot long range competitions and prefer the "factory class". Thinking this rifle could replace my Remington 700 Mil Spec 308 that is aging and my primary factory class rifle. I'd like to retire the Remington to hunting duties. Your feedback is requested!

I own 2 Winchester M70 HBV's; a .223 on its third barrel and a .308 I bought slightly used a couple years ago. The .223 is used in NRA High Power and Mid Range Prone matches and does well when I do. The .308 is my most versatile rifle after glass bedding, a DBM kit, hand stop rail and adjustable butt plate. I use it in NRA High Power and Mid Range Prone matches as well as club level steel matches to 625 yards. The .308 shoots most loads well and allows me to use several different powders, bullets and primers in our chaotic component situation. Probably 2,000 rounds on the factory barrel.
The .223 has required an extractor and firing pin replacement over its nearly 10,000 round life. No mechanical issues with the .308 so far.
Both triggers at about 2-1/2 pounds and reliable in rapid fire stages of the NRA HP matches.
