Winchester 70 bedding

I've seen some older posts about bedding a model 70. I'm about to take the task on to pillar bed my model 70 coyote I have not found a good video or anything on doing a winchester. And quite frankly I look at the stock and my head starts spinning where I need to remove wood and add bedding. And then I question if I need to put my screws into the pillars then just clamp when curing or if the bottom plate needs to be installed to cure. So many questions.

Pillar bedding can work quite well if done properly. I am a shooter and hunter, not a gunsmith. I had my smith pillar bed a few rifles and the results were excellent. I can't remember the exact charge, but it was less than $100 per rifle and was well worth having a professional do the job.

I am sure there are a lot of home gunsmiths that can do this job equally well however I am not one of them. You might want to consider a competent smith as an alternative especially if you are already in a quandary on what to do. Fixing mistakes tends to be more expensive and frustrating than having it done right the first time.

I like Model 70's and shoot a few of them. When bedding a Model 70, one of the first choices to make is whether or not he wants to utilize the middle screw as part of the bedding system. Although I often do so, I actually believe it complicates bedding and might be better left out of the equation.
I prefer to cast fibreglass pillars rather than use aluminum. I drill 9/16 inch holes through the stock and pour Acraglas (well reinforced with glass fiber) around the screws and bed the action into the stock at the same time. For the center screw, one can just not tighten it up, or he can glue an insert in to screw the front of the guard to. Al Nyhlus did this on one I believe, and it worked real well.
I won a bunch of "F" class matches using a Model 70. I even used one in HBR and didn't do too badly. Both of my silhouette rifles are Model 70's. One of the first rifles I glass bedded was a Model 70, back in the late sixties. WH

There’s good general bedding info on this site, like from the gentleman above, that is relevant to the M70, but you’ll have to piece it all together to come up with your game plan.

I just bedded (Did not do pillars) a pre-64 for my dad. Dad wound up with this extra stock, but not before ”Bubba” got a little crazy removing material. I used MarineTex, neutral kiwi shoe polish for the release agent, plumbers putty to fill in the voids, electrical tape on the bottom and front of the lug and to wrap the barrel so it would be centered in the stock’s barrel channel, and a straw to keep the material off the two bolts I used to align the action. Prior to applying the MarineTex, it took me lots of time to sort out where and how I was going to put the epoxy. The barreled action was in and out of the stock many times as I tried to envision the voids and where the epoxy would want to run. I did not clamp the action, I just let the weight of the barreled action rest on the bedding material - stress-free. I bet I had 10hrs in it - I’ve only done a few of these jobs, but maybe these before and after pictures will help answer some of your questions.
