Re-bedding a stock

I just took a action out of a stock and happened to see the pillars are higher than the bedding. The bedding has shrank and left the pillars stinking out of the bedding. So now guess I need to re-bed , don't remember what I used to bed the stock .

How much shrinkage are we talking? You want the pillars higher than your bedding. Shorter and the epoxy is doing the work of the pillar.

Years ago, with no pillers, walnut wood stocks would get compressed from tighting the screws.
Took a while but torque would change, in-lbs .

To correct this, Brownells Acraglas was let run down to the floor plate, trigger guard, after drilling holes oversize. This stopped compression of the wood.
The back of the lug only contacted the bedding. The receiver ring sat on the bedding.

With Pillers photo.
The pillars are flush or slightly below the bedding surface of the receiver and serve primarily to preclude stock compression.

When the pillars are higher than the bedding....that's all the contact the receiver has. If that's done intentionally, there's no need for any 'bedding'.

I leave around .050 between the top of the pillars and the receiver. That way, if the bedding does contract a bit, the receiver moves with it and you don't end up with the tops of the pillars above the bedding. A few examples.

For what it's worth..............
