Wilson shell holder for trimmer .308

I bought one from MidwayUSA that said for new brass and full length resized
This is a new piece of brass

And this is full length resized loaded round

IMG_2372.jpegSo I tried one that I used a small base die it worked good
So what do I need for regular full length resize brass?

Don't feel too bad.

I ordered (I think from Midway) both the new and fired .308 case holders. Received 2 identically marked holders for unfired brass. Returned them both as I had another thing going back, and reordered a couple of weeks later, and got 2 more unfired case holders. Gave up and ordered from Brownells (back when they were decent.)

In retrospect, Mr. Frank is correct - the fired case holder just sits closer to the base on new brass, but works fine.

For the 308 cartridge case designs, Wilson makes two holders, one for new cases and one for sized cases, i.e., it's a set.

Unless I am missing something which is always a possibility with "senior" brain, both pictures posted show the "new case" holder being used. Do not use the "new case" holder for F/L sized case, use the other case holder.

I have trimmed hundreds of 308 and 243 cases using the excellent Wilson trimmer and never had to use "small" base die. The F/L sized case should fit in the appropriate case holder with plenty of neck exposure to trim the case. Also, you should not be excessively reducing the radial dimension of the case to fit a case holder!

I have to use the small base die for my criterion barrel, not the shell holder
