284 sizing die

I have been using my 6.5-284 Redding Full length bushing die to resize my 284 brass with the appropriate bushing. Is that correct or do I have to get the specific Redding FL Bushing die for 284? My loaded rounds after fire forming is kind of hard to chamber even resized using various competition shell holders. Could the brass be work harden? Please advice. Thank you.

I have not used the redding bushing die in that caliber but I have used the Forster bushing die in 6.5x284.

My findings were that the opening for the neck was not large enough to accommodate the use of that die for a straight .284

If you are un sure what I would recommend is to take a fired case , measure your outside neck dimension and then remove the bushing from the die and size it as you normally would.

If the neck dimension is anything less than your fired case then you will need to have the neck portion opened up .

Chances are it may be close and that's how you've been able to seat bullets , the actual bushing you were using was not making contact but rather the neck of the die was doing the work instead.

When I went from 6.5x284 to 284 I called Redding. They told me that I could use the neck sizing die by just changing the bushing but I had to buy a new full length resizer.

Well, well, well, plenty of view but no one reply. Surely someone could enlighten me?

I don't have anything this big, but I'm learning from your post/replies. I have a 22BR that I need a F/L bushing seizer, went 6BR seizer and small bushings---you never know when the dasher will be installed. And I would have the dies already, except the seater.

This is where it pays to measure and confirm.... Off the top of my head this forster I have in 6.5x284 has a neck opening of .310" ..... By my math that is cutting it a bit close for a .284 application especially if your bushing is a .311 or .312" lol... Like I said I've not used the redding so I cant say for sure.

Sometimes dies can't bump shoulder back coz chamber of die is slightly longer then chamber of your gun, so die won't touch the shoulder of the case. Cartridge headspace gauge should tell you that part. I have seen it myself, all I had to do was take few thou off of base of the die and now it works like charm.
Second, is it tight neck chamber? Maybe you need to turn necks? How's trim to length? Just thinking out loud.

Thanks guys, I have thought of taking a couple of thou off the base of the die. Think I might just go ahead and try it. Thanks!

Have you checked headspace of case? Is shoulder getting bumped? If you don't have headspace gauge, there are improvised ways to check shoulder bump.
