Wilson comparator idea?

Raythemanroe

I was thinking that a Wilson seater die stem and cap could be used like a Hornady (Stoney Point) bullet comparator..Maybe a slot or groove like the Hornady tool to lock on your dial calipers..What I'm kinda saying is the Wilson seater stem and cap can double to sort bullet to the stem its self to insure seating results. Now I'm not saying this would replace a standard comparator, but add to the consistency..I could see it selling, a seater cap that doubles as a comparator..

Ray as long as it is hitting on the Ogive like a VLD stem, Why not try it. You will be using it to seat anyway. Thought of trying that myself. But we may find out from the more experienced shooters that this would be DUMB. I use my JB. Comparator.

The seater stem contacts the ogive way up on the nose. You need the comparator to contact the bullet where the bullet will contact the rifling.

I made a Bob Greene style comparator that uses my seating stem and measures to a point the same diameter of my hornady ogive comparator.

I sorted by base to ogive and then sorted those by seating stem to ogive(hornady comparator diameter of the ogive).

Erik and Jerry I've got all that stuff and yes they work, But like Ray I always figured if you were seating with the stem why not sort bullets with it. I know you are try to get the Ogive of the bullet on the rifling but We still measure seating depth off that stem. I use a dummy round to get that measurement. So the way I figure I'm going to know from one lot of bullets to the next which ones very enough that will make a difference in my seating depth. The ones I measure from Ogive to Ogive have to be at least .030 longer to change my seating depth. So all I'm saying is it might help keeping seating depth right.

Depending on where you are on your seating depth node, .001" can be enough to ruin your day.

The Bob Green comparator looks great, but I think sorting with the same seater you are gonna load with could result in better results.. Would be cheaper I'm sure..

How would you sort them? Bob Green tool uses two reference points, one where the stem contacts the bullet and the other where the bullet contacts the lands.

Sort with a Hornady comparator and then with the Wilson seating stem and cap.. Honestly Erik. It is just a low budget version of a Bob Green comparator tool. I just gotta believe though, that using your own seating stem would bring slightly better consistency.

Would you measure base to ogive with Hornady tool and then with seater stem and then deduct one measurement from the other?

Bob will actually match your stem if you sent it to him. Your Hornady comparator is likely the wrong size anyway, so you will lose any consistency gain obtained my using the stem.

My Hornady tool for my wsm is .297, not Horrible. Sort base to ogive with Hornady tool or Bob's true to bore version and then sort with Wilson seating stem and cap.

Mind you this is just an idea, one that could get good results built right into your dies.

Best comparator I've seen is one that a fellow shooter made from a chunk of steel cut off the barrel blank he was chambering. He merely chucked it up, ran the same reamer into it, then turned it back on each end until he had it just long enough to use as a comparator. Long enough so the bullet didn't stick out on the "bore end" and short enough on the "throat end" that he could use it not only as a comparator but also measure his seating depth on a finished cartridge. If the "gauge" touched the case the bullet was seated too deep.

Ray I tried it this morning with the JB comparator. I put the stem still in the head on the base with the bullet in the stem. I could not get a good reading! I tried spinning it like I do normally with the comparator and it was all over the place. So my conclusion is stick with the Comparator.

Oh well...cat's outa the bag...that is, for using a piece of barrel as a "comparator body" with the rifling cut away, in part, and arresting the bullet at its bearing surface...+1. Dang me! (Probably not that much of an original idea though?)
