Will the Hornady 147 ELD-M stabilise in a 1:8tw barrel?

hi everyone

I know there has been a bit of discussion about the 147gn ELD-M for 6.5mm in recent days.

I’m really just interested in experience with stabilising this projectile in a 26” 1:8 twist barrel for .260Rem. I have a box and I’m about to start reloading some for a trial.

Thanks in advance for any and all constructive advice.

Cheers

6.5x47 Lapua 6-groove 27" bbl with 8" twist - yes
260 Rem 6-groove 32" bbl with 8" twist - yes

(no mid-air blow ups - max. velocity 2824fps... but from different lot of ELD-M 147 as was mentioned here)

Yes the 8 twist will be fine. My Creedmoor load with them is 2820fps in my 8 twist 27" barrel. I had them up to 2850 but the 2820fps was more accurate. Factory ammo down at 2720 shoots great as well in this rifle.

I've got a 7.7 twist (advertised) on my 6.5 creedmoor RPR and it stabilized them all the way down at 2650. They also don't mind a huge jump. I'm over 0.090" to the lands to fit in the magazines and they seem to like it there just fine.

Thanks for the feedback. I had a Suspicion there could be an issue based on the weight, length etc of the projectile.

I was thinking about starting at 40gn of H4831 and working up to 42gn in .3 grain increments. Will be watching pressure very closely. Aiming for 2700fps or so.

I am moving and no longer have a 6.5. But have about 450 of the 147 eldm. Would sell them for a great deal

You might be on the light side with powder. Hodgdon has 41.5 starting to 46.2 max of H4831 in a 260 with the 147.

Im pretty conservative to start with new loads and projectiles but I’ll reassess my starting loads and might dial it up a bit. I’m planning to seat about .020 from the lands and honestly had no idea what powder capacity would be with the .260 case and the bigger slower powder.

Would love to take you up on that but located in Australia, export regs are pretty tough out of the US and can be problematic importing to Australia.

They work well in my 1-8 Krieger in standard 260. You might try some loads with rl26.
Mine shoot very well 0.015 off.

I shoot 6.5mm 152 Matrix VLD's which should be longer than the Hornady from several 1 in 8 twist barrels and have had no issues regarding stability right out to 1000 yards even in high winds.

The 147s stabilize fine from my 8” twist 24” Criterion 6.5x47.
