Will a Remington 700 LA feed a 7mm-08 as smooth as a SA?

Before I go assuming that it should work, I figure that I better double check here with some of you guys first .....before I go making any rifle purchase; Will a Rem 700 BDL long action that was originally built to feed a 25-06, 270, 280, or 30-06, feed and chamber my shorter cased 7mm-08AI cartridges just as reliably?......and extract and toss out unfired cartridges reliably too?

I'm thinking of loading 7mm-08 AI cases with the base of 150gr, or 162 grain Amax bullets set in the neck (and not much in the case body) to allow more space for powder. So, I was advised to go and use a long action if I want the BDL repeater aspect of the rifle to work properly. While I intend to use this rifle mostly for target work and intend to feed the cartridges individually into the chamber by hand, I still want the rifle to feed and function properly out of the magazine like any other off-the-shelf 700 BDL rifle, if I ever want to use it that way.

No reason that it won't, you're dealing with a push feed so that shouldn't be an issue and extraction & ejection shouldn't either. I have a 300 WSM on a controlled feed action that feeds & cycles perfectly so there's no reason that a 700 won't.

With all due respect to you Larry, it sounds like this is an assumption and you have never owned or seen anybody's Remington 700 long action actually chamber 308 case length cartridges.

I've asked this same question at another websight and so far the response is negative. One guy tells me it works if the cases don't move around with recoil, and another guy (a gunsmith) is suggesting that I convert the rifle to a Kwik Klip detachable magazine fed weapon. That's not a very positive response from a gunsmith, and I've asked him to divulge if he's saying that it doesn't work reliably.

hello vanib; this is a good ? the answer is yes, have often used the 700 la for .308 length rds. my personal rifle is a standard .284 win. & shoot the 180gr. hybrid berger and it feeds & extracts well. have also built the ,243ai, 7mm-08, .308win, .308ai, .260rem,--etc. If you are going to use standard ammo with a light bullet you will need a magazine spacer block, a short action follower & spring to keep the cartridge stabilized in the long action. your local gunsmith will know what to do.-------take care craig

I also have a Rem. 700 clone long action in a 300wsm feeds flawless. I shoot the 210 bergers and my OAL is somewhere around 3.100.

Van,
This is a very good question I have often wondered myself, there are several good smiths that frequent this site, if I were you I would p.m a couple of them, I have to go back to work but might do some more checking and p.m you later.

Naaaa....no sense in contacting the gunsmith's privately to make a PIA out of myself. They get enough technical questions all the time from folks who don't intend to pay their bills. I'm sure there are plenty of smith's who frequent this websight. Either they don't know, or don't wish to "give it away". That's their prerogative and I understand.

I e-mailed my local smith in Hempstead a long question the other day, and got no reply. And mind you that this is a guy that has built 2 rifles for me already! No problem.

Okay as you wish, I hope you come back and let us know how the LA worked for you as like I said I have been interested in that for a long time.
