Will a 6 br feed from a magazine?

i have a Remmy 308 5r that i'm turning into a 6 br and making a new stock for. I'm wondering if it's worth trying to add the detachable mag feature to the build. I did a search, here, and read about the aics working but not a lot of detail.

Yes a 308AI mag works. Was using mine just last night. I would suggest some modification to the mag however, with a spacer being inserted at the back of the mag.

I also use an AI type mag, except my spacer is in the front. Does work great. I might have to try one with the spacer in the rear to make mag loading easier on the fingers.

The reason I say one in the rear is I found that the bolt skipped over the rounds when they were pushed all the way back to the mag. Doesnt need much just 3 or 4mm and it would be fine. I like having room in the front in case you want to run a long bullet like an amax or vld.

I would also consider the extraction of the case. I could get the br rounds to feed from a savage centerfeed but they would fall off the bolt head just after they cleared the chamber upon opening the bolt. From all the reading, it sounds like that is very common because of the BR cartridge being so short.

That is the same problem that Remington had with the 221 and 17 Furball... they are so short that on extraction, the case flipped into the bolt lug slot in the receiver, and then they fell out of the bolt face before they cleared the port.

Rem fixed it by moving the extractor up higher so the case wouldn't go into the lug slots, thereby forcing the case to stay on the bolt until it cleared the port - but that would be a real custom deal with the 308 bolt face.

I use the pt&g bottom for a BDL so it uses the single stack AI mags and it feeds good. But like others have said you have to put a spacer in the back of the mag.

From what I have seen the 6BR and Dasher usually doesn't work with the slide type extractors because they let the case go into the lugs upon extraction. The Sako type pull the case up and out and usually works. I don't have a repeater but have read on here that guys like ALF have no trouble. There were some threads that ALF posted on and had pictures of his Varmint repeaters. Matt

Well, I think I'll give it a go. I'd like to try a switch barrel rig cause the 308 barrel that's on it shoots "pretty good". Thanks for the help.

The one action I would say to use if you could, would be a howa 1500. I had one in 22BRX (was a 22-250 donor action) and it fed 4 cases stacked in the internal magazine fine. But the rem with AI mags isnt bad.

I did realize an extraction failure at first with my PT&G bolt with the m16 extractor, but I removed the ejector and filed the retaining pin slot wider so that the ejector would stick out farther from the bolt face.

There some thing u do called the bryant conversion mile bryant- a retired rifle builder. I got pics n insteuctions if u need to know more.

I'll gladly accept any information, thank you. I have the PT&g bottom metal in hand and am cutting and drilling the stock blank, now. Looks like this is going to take a while. I had to go get some new bits and carving gouges.

This question seems to come up every other day......

I've put together several 22 and 6 Dasher, all on 700's, all fed fine with no magazine alterations. I found them to feed best when treated like a 30-30 lever, no dilly dallying working the bolt, and life is good. I would never put up with a coyote gun that didn't feed.....

Those are some nice rigs, Alf. I had an extra 5r lying around and wanted a project. Started as a "stock build"' but I thought about doing a switch barrel rig. Still not settled on the 2nd or maybe third caliber. 30br, 6br, 6xc, 6dasher. Of course, I'm looking for high performance and long barrel life and a repeater.😊😊😊😱 Not too much to ask for? So far I have the stock rough cut, channeled, bedded and bottom metal fitted. Still plenty to do before deciding on caliber and mag conversion.

I think the dasher feed a little better since the shoulder is blown out, makes it just a touch longer. I've never had a problem ejecting a dasher but a BR is another story.

Technically a Dasher should feed worse due to the straighter body and the 40 degree shoulder. OAL is the same.

I;m building a 6br as well right now. I decided to do detachable bottom metal that fits accuracy international mags. Kicker is I bought a "Bob Sled" to use. it's a single shot block that slips right into the bottom metal and makes a perfect single shot out of a repeater action. They make them for AR15s too, I love em.. I am going to give it a shot with a mag too, BUT I got the bobsled to use if it doesnt work out, and I found single shot to really not be a big hassle with feild a long range rifles. just insurance if the mag gives you problems as long as you have bottom metal to fit AI mags heres a back up plan..
