Why WSM not WM for F-Open?

I have a question that has been bugging me for the past few days. I notice quite a few guys running WSM's in F- open, but what I dont see is any Regular WM. I am just curious as to why that is. Is it weight saving from the short action? Better inherent accuracy from the Short mag vs the standard mag? Just a question for my own knowledge. Thanks for any insight!

Most people won't use a regular WM due to the belted case.

You could actually get more velocity out of a WM.

The WSM is really easy to get shooting; much bigger nodes. In 1000 yard benchrest they are really poplar and hold a lot of the records. The brass is like a tank and lasts forever with annealing. I know guys that are shooting the same brass for 4 seasons. You can't do that with any belted mag. Without the belt you can size the whole case. Also with the WSM the case is pretty well full of powder. Less powder and almost the same velocity and they are just accurate. The barrels last longer with benchrest type of accuracy.

Efficiency.... when a less capacity cartridge can produce near equal velocities, it is doing it more efficiently, from which inherent accuracy is also gained.

This is the kind of info I was looking for! Thanks guys!

One thing you will notice if you look at the load data for the WSMs and the RSAUM vs either the 7mRM or the 300WM is that the short cases get very nearly the same MV for less powder, and the BR guys seem to have proven that the over bore case size is inherently accurate.

That said, I keep my 7mmRM for a hunting rifle. (though it never comes out of the safe in the eastern US, I think my 7-08 is more than enough for most anything east of the Rockies.) The 7mmRM is plenty accurate and to date the ammo is far more plentiful on the shelf if for whatever reason you have to buy it.

The WSM can equal WM velocitys because they run higher PSI in the WSM. There is no free lunch.

But I agree, running near the top end of the PSI curve seems to give the best accuracy.

Never said the WSM couldn't equal WM velocity......
I said: "when a less capacity cartridge can produce near equal velocities", meaning any cartridge and not stating which one can produce more or less velocity, just near equal velocities.
With efficiency gains, there is "free lunch" no matter what the pressure level, and no matter if it is a cartridge, or an engine, or the furnace in your house.

But I agree, running near the top end of the PSI curve seems to give the best accuracy.
Not sure what your agreeing with, because I never stated nothing about PSI or running at top end.

OK..I'll rephrase....A lesser capacity case can match the velocity of greater capacity case because you run the PSI higher in the smaller case. I used the 300 WM vs WSM as an example because those were the cases that the op referred to.
