Why would you "freeze" a scope?

Lloyd,
Sorry I got your goat! I asked this to be on a PM or email. No use arguing with you as you won't actually search for the truth.

No disrespect to Al Nyhus, but why is it so difficult to expect a quality constructed scope to hold an atmosphere ( 15psia/ 1psig) of inert gas, typically nitrogen, from an outside environment containing 78% nitrogen? It certainly doesn't have the permeability of the helium molecule which can actually permeate though a metal container.

So as stated it can't leak out of the turrets, objective, or eyepiece? I don't believe it will penetrate aluminum.

Been researching and apparently Nitrogen does permeate rubber (o-rings). Question is what replaces it...or since it's at equilibrium pressure-wise with the atmosphere does it really leave the scope?

There's just no way to keep the inert gas in there while you seal her up.

I think they purge them with inert gas to remove any moisture before they are sealed up. We purge SS piping before welding. We PURGE the air out The air contains moisture.
But I'm sure over time the seals break down enough to allow pressure to equalize

Back to the OP locked up scopes.

I've owned a couple frozen scopes and now shoot a March.
They are frozen in different manners and with different design of external mounts.
All in an effort to illiminate the chance of reticle shifts when trying to shoot zero groups at short range.

I didn't take to them to well just didn't suit me.

Scopes are purged with nitrogen, then filled with nitrogen and sealed with O-rings.

Without the nitrogen in the scope, they would soon "fog up".

A glove box would work for low volume. They claim they are purged 4x to remove any trace of moisture to the molecular level. They also claim they are Nitrogen filled. A nitrogen charged automated assembly room is not out of the realm of possibility.

I think that you are wrong and that is my opinion. JRS, how do they fill them then and who said that? I'm trying to figure out where they put the gas in and seal it before it leaves. LHSmith, a lot of the top end scopes are purged with argon. In your scenario, would the room be filled with argon? You say they? Who is they?

Quite true.

Great read with photos. The assemble chamber is bigger than a glove box. But you didn't miss it by much

When I toured the Leupold plant, I watched the filling of the scopes, along with other parts of the assembly process. They might be using a more high tech method now, but at that time, they had a number of scopes in a rectangular shaped transparent box like enclosure. The "box" was pressurized with nitrogen, and the person installing the O-ring did so with her arms in rubber type gloves extending from the outside of the "box". Something similar to a sandblasting box, or as used in research labs. (glove box)

JRS- Do you recall what the inert gas was pressurized at? Is the water immersion test a separate test at higher pressure? Still fuzzy on how their famed water immersion test (they invented it) works.

No LH. I am not aware of how much pressure was used. What I remember about the water immersion testing is that it is submerged in HOT water at a reduced pressure. The amount of pressure???

Butch: I don't see any reason to do a big search. You reject facts even when they're laid at your feet. I prefer to accept what Leupold, Nikon and many others publish to blindly accepting your opinion. As somebody once said (I forget who), you're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts.

I didn't know you were that sensitive to what I post. Should I run it by you first in-order that I don't get your goat again? You've done a lot of posting, but have presented no facts.
