why weight of case

i have seen this more then once maybe i have overlooked it in the form but can not find it there or in any books that i have. question why does the weight of a case have to do with a flyer or a shot going off? i have not even tried this and do not know what is good or bad. please enlighten me...... how much diff. what is starting point and what is stopping point. i know and have watched shooters mark their missed shot case with marker but never asked why. i guess i should of but did not what to bother them there. thanks for any info rick

The theory is that cases of differing weight have different volumes, therefore with the same powder charge they will produce different velocities.
Donovan Moran has done a lot of work disproving this theory. At his urging I filled my heaviest and lightest cases with H380. To my suprise the powder in each case weighed the same. Testing with powder has proved more accurate.

If a case is wildly lighter you have more case volume supposedly.By weighing it is one more variable.I tried weighing a load of .223 case's and it had zero effect out of a bench gun out to 200 yds.It may show up when shooting long range.I weigh anyways and if I find they are out more than 2 grains I start another pile and so on.But at short range out to 200 yds I doubt that it makes a whole lot of difference when using lapua brass.If you use run of the mill brass like remington,federal,winchester etc it would be wise to cull the really bad ones and set aside for foulers or woodchucking when you don't look for the brass.

I still weight sort all my brass, in one to two grain lots.

However, shoot a box of 77 grain GMM out of a good custom 223...admire your 1/2 inch or better 20 shot group..... Then weigh those federal cases....

Theory disproved. You might see a 4 grain difference.

But I'll still weigh them every time.

Uniformity, brass from the same lot that is weight sorted "theoretically" should have the same case capacity. Second, its faster than filling each case with water and weighing it twice empty and full of water.

+1. When I used Remington 260 Rem brass, I had ~300 cases sourced from a variety of ammunition/new brass. The cases weighed from 159 gr to 165 gr. I appeared to have two distinct batches of brass and would typically sort the brass into 1 gr ranges. The very few 164 gr or heavier cases got binned.

I weight sort lapua as well, 1/10 grain .

Just kidding. I sort lapua on target at two to three
Times the distance I intend to shoot the cartridge.

100/200 lg- 300
600 comp- 1000 if it'll reach

Bout 1 out of 100 just don't fly right. If that brass kicks twice,
She's a goner. In the deer hunting pile.
