Why not a 6.5 Rem Mag???

I'm building a deer, antelope, sheep rifle. Want a 6.5mm rifle. Why does everyone like the 6.5 x 284? Is it just one of those magic cases, that loves a 6.5mm bullet? I am new to custom guns and new to reloading. I would really like some feedback. I want to spit a 6.5mm at 3100 to 3200 fps with a 130gr bullet. Do not want a 264 win mag.
Please be nice!

May I ask why you don't want a .264 Win Mag ? I've had one for years and love it. If you are into the 6.5 you should consider the new 6.5 Creedmoor that Hornady is coming out with. It has the recipe for the load on the outside of the box, so if it shoots good, rebuild them to the exact same recipe, from over the counter components. The reason that most of the people like the 6.5x284 is the cartridge will go into a short receiver. You can get the .264 Win. Mag and then use 7mm Rem Mag. brass for shells, it is the exact same size as the 7mm except for the bullet dia. or buy a .260 Rem. The .264 Got a bad rap to start out with because the people were trying to burn the barrels out, and it will if you continue to try for 3800 fps and better with it. But keep it down to the moderate velocities and it is a great shooter, better down range balistics than the 7mm. There are a lot of shooters here in the states that have never cuddled up to the 6.5, yet it is the caliber of Europe for long range shooting, and starting to catch on here, the Creedmoor is a fine example from Hornady. I load my .264 with 100gr. V-Max bullets,3300fps) and hunt Antelope and Deer with it, especially when the range gets extended, it will reach out and touch them with authotity. I also load it with 129gr. Hornady's, which I found to be the most accurate out of this rifle, and go kill Elk with it. It is the ONLY Mag. I own, but I will own it till they pat me in the face with a shovel. I am considering building me a 6.5 Creedmoor, have a barrel and an action, just need the time.

The only real problem I can think of is the pinch you`d be in if your ammo got lost on your trip. Not to many places got 6.5 Rem mag ammo in sheep country...

hey olsingleshot, a 6.5x284 would burn less powder than a 6.5-06 and factory made brass is available. i don't think the 6.5x284 is a magic cartridge, but there is alot of info right on this site to get you up and shooting great right from the start. 6.5x55 swede would be good too, and rhino will help you with getting a good load going :D cliffe
