Why it makes no financial sense to convert a SA Remington to 6.5PRC

This gunsmith makes valid points from a practical and financial standpoint. Has nothing to do with not liking the cartridge! Short video easy to understand.

I also disagree. Over the years a lot of fine rifles have been built using the Rem 700 SA & LA. And now days with the availability of switch barrels many more can be built very reasonably.

Exactly right a 6BR with Remage barrel won HV 200 yard score match this past weekend . Entire gun cost less than $ 1000 ,barrel and trigger were the only new parts ...it beat custom actions.guns that cost 3-5 times more.

The comment was made 100% in jest but I’ll stand behind it and play the game.

Pay to true, time, and trigger job on a 700sa and you could have bought an entire tikka lite rifle and then parted it out Recouping money. That’s leaving out cost of opening for a wyatts which you won’t need.

Or pay an extra 300$ and you are in a defiance tenacity.

All this leaving current rem QC aside.

I’ll amend to, aside from nostalgia And rebuilding a rifle/action you already own there’s no sense in it. I never once said great rifles haven’t been built on one.

There is more to the story. A person could make a 20 minute video talking about all the possibilities.

For example, a 6.5 PRC, a 6.5 Rem Mag, and a 308 Winchester all have approximately the same case taper. Also, a 6.5 Rem Mag case is longer than a 6.5 PRC.

Yeah, like hunting to save money on food. View attachment 1198885
Musta been 15 years ago I was working an OT job and a guy on our crew took a week off at the start of gun season. Next week he gets back and brings us some venison to cook up and have for lunch. We were eating and he says “ Enjoy it Boys that’s about $250.00 per pound”. Wasn’t nearly as good as the corn fed around here either.

I watched his video. I have watched quite a few of his videos.

All he is saying that if you want a regular Remington converted to a cartridge such as a 6.5 PRC, there is quite a bit of work and expense involved it making it function properly.

Never did he say anything remotely derogatory about the cartridge or Remington actions in general.

Doesn't it depend on the application? My understanding is that recent mfg Rem 700 actions are [much] better than they used to be. Enough better that for hunting, XTC and PRS they can be used as is [i.e., 1/2 MOA groups easily within reach].

LOL. These guys to are obsessed with feeding rounds in a repeater....that said, I have a 6.5 SAUM in my safe built on a remington 700 Long Action that feeds just fine. I never shoot it and should sell it, but it is a fine rifle. Not sure why everyone wants to build repeaters on SA. I build single shots on a short action, up to and including 300NM. Here is my reminder that Remingtons can be made to shoot as good or better than custom actions. It does make it more economically appropriate if you can do the work yourself.

My son has a 700SA I would not hesitate to build on it but I would not build a 6.5 PRC. He asked me about that years ago and I told it made no sense to do it just because you could! LOL
