Why float the tang?

What is different about savage actions that makes floating the tang advantageous to accuracy? Just wondering why you do t float the tang on all types of actions. Thanks,

Mason

On other actions, the rear action screw threads into the tang. On a Savage, it does not. The front trigger guard screw is the rear action screw, and rear trigger guard screw is threaded into the stock. For the many years that Savages did not come with pillars, the small bridge of wood that was between the magazine and trigger mortises, was likely to compress slightly when the rear action screw was tightened, and if the tang was bedded, stress would have been put on the action. By floating it, that stress, and the negative effect it would have on accuracy would be avoided. If a good pillar job is done, this is less likely to be an issue.

Understood, thank you very much for the answer. I just picked up a Mossberg MVP last week for a rock chuck gun, and noticed that shared a lot of commonalities with the savage action including action screw placement. Looks like I will be relieving some wood around the tang on that gun as well.
