Why does weatherby get a pass?

First .270 Wby, Rifle When in, my late 20's, .. I loaded up some, 110 gr Hornady HP's with, a near case full of,. IMR 4895 ( Clocking around, 3,600 ish, fps ) and Blew "Stew Meat" sized Chunk's Off, a couple of Coyotes for, 25 to 30 yards up, the Hillside ( Closest Thing to, a .257 Wby for,. Me ! ) Yikes, the Destruction was,.. "Horiffic" !

The whole Mark V experience seemed designed to discourage third party and reloader involvement.

The high price, double-radiussed shoulder, nine lug action, huge bolt body, and the shortish tenon best suited for light weight barrels all dissuade a gunsmith from trying to mechanically improve one.

The trigger actuated bolt release ensures non-interchangeability. The Mark V isn’t always blued to a high luster but it is always sensitive to moisture as no stainless versions are offered.

One could in theory run those cartridges through any custom build desired and avoid all of those Mark V rifle issues. The brass is expensive though. There have probably been times when only Norma supplied it, and that’s a risky proposition for consideration as match cartridge.

How difficult would it be to grind those reamers. My understanding is that a blindfolded individual could tactilely discern a Weatherby cartridge from an earnest imitation.
Zack at ODCR made me a great shooting 257 WBY on a REM 700 action.

Weatherby, at least in my younger days, had superior marketing. Their beautifully crafted wood stocks were also attractive to many. It was also a status symbol for the affluent.

Their cartridges created the illusion that "Joe Hunter" could take a big game animals at extreme distances. Most hunters did not have the field skills to make those shots. The advantage was imaginary rather than practical.

Shooters will always be looking for a cartridge that promises to improve their performance because it is easier to buy something than put in the hard work and time to learn how to shoot and perfect your field shooting skills. I have seen it time and time again, countless times, at the ranges over my 50+ years at the ranges and when I shot competitive pistol for 30+ years.

Jack O'Connor took almost all North American big game with the 270 Win. Why? He was an accomplished hunter and skilled field shot.

Clarence Hammonds didn’t mind working on my Mark V 257, Mr Hammonds claimed all of his work was done to bench rest standards.
I had a mentor quite a few years ago, his 270 WBYs were as accurate as most heavy barreled 22-250s, his rifles accounted for many Eastern deer and much Western game.
Jim Carmichael wrote about shooting the 300 Weatherby with varmint grade accuracy.
Some guys just start flinching when they hear “Weatherby”.

I have a Mark V and it’s my favorite hunting rifle. It’s the smaller 6 lug action ultralight weight model. Very easy to carry with fluted pencil Krieger barrel. It’s not one of their own cartridges though. Factory chambered it the good even older 30-06! I fell into a deal that just couldn’t pass up when I bought it. I was in our local Gander Mountain store about 20 years ago, and always looked through the used racks. I didn’t see anything that interested me, so continued up to counter by new stuff to look. I right away noticed 3 Weatherbys in a row and 2 were priced at $1289, and one at $850. I asked what the difference was between them? I was told absolutely nothing, other than 1 had been in stock for 2 years so they discounted it. So I asked to look. While I was checking it out, the guy behind counter scanned the tag on it. The computer priced it at $760. I immediately said “I’ll take it!”

I have their Mark V Super Varmint Master in 223 Rem. Out of the box, with only a minor trigger adjustment, this rifle shot in the sub 1/2 moa range and on occasion, 1/4 moa range in its early life.

Today, I have 2,189 rounds through it and it still shoots in the 1/2 to 5/8 moa range with tuned reloads. I've taken 356 eastern ground hogs with it and a few predators. It's an outstanding performing rifle.

Was chatting with a buddy about this . Seem when folks are getting a lil upset and going on tirades about new wizbang wildcats, the ARC's , Valkyries , PRC's ..y'all know the conversations , no one and I mean NO ONE seems to have a thing to say about weatherby and there multitude of rather..... unique ( if you ask me ) wildcats . Gotta ask ....why do they get a pass lol ? :D only thing I can think is it's because they don't to the annoying marketing and such that Hornady and the like does .....that or it's a legacy thing...they've been doing it for longer ect..
Honestly that's a great thought.
Used to be a certain sporting goods store here in what we call over the mountain Birmingham.ruch yuppie folks....

You only can imagine listening to the salesman selling rifles to these rich guys.

They would walk in and say I need the best thing you got and they didn't know crap about cartridges or rifles or really hunting for that matter.typical guys who needed someone to walk them to the shooting house cause they never showed up to work days or did any scouting to know where to go hunt... seriously this store is this bad and is still like this.

But back then you only had standard stuff like rem 700 ,win mod 70 ,poor folks hunted with savage rifles and shotguns in standard cartridges.

These guys would walk out with weatherby Mark x rifles in 270 weatherby,300 weatherby,257 weatherby and a khales or most likely a Swarovski scope they had to have them attached cuz they had no clue how to attach a scope to a rifle.lol

The weatherby cartridges have always surpassed in velocity to the standard cartridges but they are all barrel burners and brass is expensive...

For the average joe who actually shoots alot they aren't practical compared to say 308 that kills stuff just as dead and more efficiently with less noise blast and MONEY

But it's no different today same guys buying fierce rifles and such cause they aren't knowledgeable enough to build a rifle.

But no they fit a niche for some and I'm sure they are struggling in today's environment.

Was definitely good on them with the 700 platform rifles and actions with the new action whatever it's called 307?

I can't lie there's still a discontinued rifle they have i still want but it's in a semi standard cartridge 338-06 but it's discontinued.and accuracy was hit or miss with these

Then you had the weatherby stocks full of salt ! I forget details but they had a large run of bad stocks that caused rusting and pitting .salt cured I believe.

They have almost no marketing of their cartridges. Nothing to complain about when you forget all about it in a day. Hornady is in your face nonstop.

Lets face it too, Hornady has commercialized what only handloaders with custom chambered guns could do. You get butt hurt when your 308 you love so much gets spanked by a 6.5 creed or 6.5 PRC. I resisted the 17hmr cuz I had a 22mag for years and years. I didn't need no stupid wiz bang. I don't even own the 22mag anymore. I love that little hmr.

Oh yeah 50 fps separates every single cartridge but we keep buying the new greatest thing Hornady puts out.lol

I don't but most do.im still 223,260,308,30-06,300wsm,338-06,300 win mag.no ai or wissums .I won't mention the surplus stuff I load

If I had to shoot f class tomorrow I'd buy 308 or 284 win.just me

Buy i do think if we started developing cartridges tomorrow they would all start with 30° shoulders...

I went to high school and worked with a guy that bought and sold Belgian Brownings and German Weatherby rifles. He had a guy that had a big gun shop that would buy most anything he wanted to sell. He found a Weatherby 460 and bought a hand full of cartridges and one Saturday we went to the woods to see how bad it kicked. I came from the factory with a muzzle break milled into the barrel, not removable like the ones we see today. he found a big southern yellow pine tree and shot it, and the bullet went right through the tree. We were in his work truck and he got 2 framing squares and we held them together and made a big set of calipers and decided it had penetrated 25 inches of pine tree. We looked around and saw there was another big pine and if we moved a little we could hit them both. So we twisted around and lined up on both, the squares said it was 23 inches, the 460 shot through both, 48 inches of pine tree, we moved again to get a third tree lined up, but never could get the bullet to hit the third tree. I thought it was the grain of the wood deflecting the bullet off of it's path. A 460 wea that will penetrate 48 inches of pine tree, actually more as we had an exit but could not hit the third tree. Love them hate them, they do what Roy designed them to do, period. The recoil was not too bad, as a lady friend of one of our group shot it three times.

Weatherby should've been in the porn industry. He made a living because "his magnum is bigger than your magnum" Lol! Like Hornady, it was mostly about marketing even back then. There was a time not so long ago that Big Green(Remington) ran the gun related marketing world. Since their bankruptcy, Hornady has done much of the same today, without Remington in their way.

those made in germany varmint rifles were pretty nice. and the japanese aren't too bad looking either. I don't know how those rifles shoot.

I think people don't talk much about the Weatherby because it's been around so long.
By today's technological standards they're lower efficiency. I shot a bunch but never owned one, I do have a Howa 1500 in 223.

Modern cartridge designs catch flak from the yackers, yack, yack, yack!

In most cases new cartridge designs perform similar to older less efficient designs but in terms of hand loading may not be as versatile. The 6.8SPC, 6.5 Grendel, 6ARC and the entire Creedmoor line perform well as cartridges within their design parameters. They're all great choices to build a tool, (rifle) around.

Most of the bad talk is just that talk.

Just the gun and caliber one needs for a day in the Prairie Dog towns.
