Why buy Burris scopes? Here's one reason...

Just got off phone with Burris Customer Service. I had sent in my 10 year old Black Diamond 8-32 for a repair of parallax knob, which was not holding. I got the bad news first, they can't fix the parallax knob on this specific scope. Bummer, it has been one of my best scopes ever purchased. Then the good news, they are sending me a brand new XTR II of my choosing. Dayum.

Since im getting into PRS pretty heavily as of late, I chose the XTR II 5-25 with SCR mil reticle. It will be right at home on my Ruger Precision 6.5 Creedmoor or in my safe with several Burris Signature series 4-16 and 6-24 scopes. Customer service like this certainly fosters customer loyalty. I've already decided (since phone call) my DMR scope for my AR15 will be a Burris XTR, likely 3-15. Or a 4-20 with new H59 reticle.

You do realize that your Black Diamond scope was "Made in the USA", where as the XTR 2 series are made in the Phillipinnes ?

I love my Burris Signature Select 3-10x 40mm, and my Pentax Lightseeker XL 4-16x 44mm which are also Made in the USA, but if they can't be repaired, (if ever broken) I will not be happy with an Asian model unless its made in Japan.

I must be getting old. I remember when we looked at products that said Made in Japan with disgust as well. These days, compared to the junk sent over from China we see it as on a level as fine German engineering... I guess things change.

That's outstanding customer service for sure!

Japan makes great glass. They may not be as well known for rifle scopes but if you hire a professional photographer he is likely to be using a Cannon, Minolta, or Nikon with very good glass. Wouldn't surprise me a bit if some of the best and most expensive Observatories arnt using Japanese glass.hiroshima-detroit.jpg

I wonder if any of that sand at ground zero is in my new scope??? We Americans made a lot of glass there in 1945..

Burris is my favorite hunting scope and I have many. Just sent back a pair of Steiner binoculars that wore on one side.

New pair sent back. Steiner is Burris today.

I'm not that old. I'm only 45 and I still look at things made in Japan with disgust and always will. Things do change, people become complacent sheeple and follow the masses ......

Not a fan of Burris. Here is why. They came out with a 6x scope with parallax adjustment, 1/5 moa adjustments, and a perfectly sized dot specifically for Hunter Class BR. They performed beyond all expectations. Shortly thereafter, they decided to replace some brass internal parts with plastic.....resulting in failure to hold POA. They had the market for it, BR shooters are not afraid to spend $ on things that work, the original Burris 6x was overwhelmingly favored over Leupolds 6x Competition model that cost 50% more, but they refused to go back to the original design.

No matter. Japanese goods are pretty good these days. At least when you compare them to Chinese stuff. As for American? Most American companies are outsourced to China anyway. I bet if people looked closer they will find that a lot of things they think are American or Japanese or whatever are by name only and most stuff comes from China or some other quasi Communist country.

Sadly, made in America doesn't always mean what it used to either...
I have to give the Japanese credit for one thing, they pretty much take pride in everything they make, the Chinese, not so much!

To me it isn't a question of does Japan make a quality scope or not. For me, I will not buy a foreign product if I can buy a similar or better USA made product. And, I am absolutely willing to pay more for a comparable USA made product every time! I live in the U.S.A. so to me it is just common sense to support this country's economy before any other. Buying foreign made anything just hurts America.

I agree, I buy made in America when I can if all things are equal or at least reasonably comparable, but I work hard for my money and I'm not willing to pay double, for equal or similar quality, just because it's made in the U.S.A. I am willing to pay about 20-25% more for made in U.S.A. products with all things being equal, but unfortunately in today's world, there are very few, if any, "affordable" optics made entirely, or even partially, in the U.S.A. So if I am going to buy foreign products, it makes sense to buy Japanese over Chinese, because our trade deficit with China is so much greater than it is with Japan, or at least that's my philosophy anyway.

What I'm amazed at is that 90+% of our choices are from Communist countries! WTF?? I grew up during the cold war where Communism was a dirty word. We did our best to keep them down financially so as to keep the upper hand militarily over them. Now we are financing it! It makes me sick to see communist made items for sale here. It also makes me sick to know these so called American companies have set up shop there.

We have a Socialist/Marxist as President now, why would you be surprised by this country's stance towards communism? Ignorant people have been conned into believing they can/should have everything in life that it can offer, whithout having to work for it! I hate it too, but all we can do is VOTE for politicians who's views are more in line with the views of our Founding Fathers, so we need look vastly past which political party it is that they represent. Voting only for a particular political party instead of voting on the views and values that are represented by the candidates running is what has gotten us in the mess we're in now!!!
Sorry, but not sorry, for the political rant...

Voting is only one thing we can do. The bigger problem is that people buy foreign made cars, trucks, motorcycles etc. It doesn't matter what the politicians allow to come into this country, if we don't buy it, they won't make any money. Then they won't have a great economy or a great military that we have to worry about. The same people complaining about communist countries doing so well are the same people driving down the road in ,for example, a KIA or Toyota and bragging about how great it is....... common sense isn't that common. And before you guys tell me that KIA is now made in Georgia........ KIA wasn't made in Georgia when it started out. They are now made in Georgia so they can fool most sheeple into believing it's American made, while sending the huge profits back to the mother land and using it to build a big military with.

I think everyone still views KIA as a foreign company. KIA, Toyota, Honda, etc are made here because it makes business sense to make those products here. The same is true for American companies that make products in foreign countries. At the end of the day, businesses exist to increase shareholder value. Our government, on both sides of the aisle, has constructed laws and regulations that have resulted in manufacturing jobs disappearing from America. They have a choice - foreign production or no production - and they rightfully choose foreign production.

If you want to see how communism/socialism ruins economies, just look at unions. Unions are a very socialist in nature, and when you look at industries where manufacturing jobs have been sent overseas, you often find a very strong union presence. This is a global economy, and you can get pissed and say it shouldn't be, but it doesn't change the facts. Basic economics dictates that countries will export goods they make efficiently, and will import goods they make inefficiently. Unions have destroyed much of the efficiency in manufacturing, and aided by ever-increasing regulations, have pushed manufactured goods to be an import instead of an export.

The idea that foreign auto makers aren't taxed on their operations here, or that all of the money flows back to the foreign country, is simply a fallacy. The foreign car companies contribute the same per capita to the economy as Ford or GM.

I have owned four Toyota 4x4 pickups. The first three were made in Japan, and were excellent vehicles. The latest (and likely last) one was made in Texas, and is BY FAR, the biggest POS of the bunch. Pretty obvious what the difference is....

As for supporting some other country's military, it's a stretch to say that buying a vehicle is building another country's military, but regardless, you do realize that Japan is an ally, right?
