It depends on the brand and style. I don't use high rings on any of my SR score rifles and my earmuffs don't touch the stock. If you use earmuffs they hit the stock.

yesHas anyone said
"It's to keep your cheek and head gear off the gun?"
Sheesh .....
I was being sarcastic ...yes
Nine (9) people have said more or less that.
Thanks for asking this question. I’m pretty new too and the higher scope rings are a nuance that I had been missing.I'm new to benchrest and it seems everyone runs there scope super high off the barrel, why is that? and I'm looking for lower rings and I see Kebly's only offer's one very high option, so is there anyone out there offering a lower rings for the dovetail BR guns?
that is a biggieIf you use earmuffs they hit the stock.

If your scope has parallax adjustment and it is properly adjusted, eye position should have no impact on group size. Most benchrest shooters shoot free recoil and do not want their rifle touched by their cheek. Paralax at 100 and 200 yds can be a problem but once you learn to always place your eye in the correct place it really makes small groups smaller, at least for me.
I hate it, when straddling the back of the stock, and your buttocks come to a screeching halt under recoil !! Lmao.If I had more gentle buttocks to play with I'd never go shooting!
