The new Competition scope is at some point going to be a winner no doubt about that. I purchased one hoping that it would be just the deal on a new F-Class rig I was finishing up, The 55 power was a big selling feature for me. I own 6 Nightforce scopes, 4 NXS, 1 a 8x32x56 with 1/8th click adjustments, three 12x42x56 1/4 click and two Benchrest Models. All 6 of my scopes have the NP 2R reticle and all of them are on Match Rifles both F-Class and Long Range Benchrest.
The really big problem I had with the Competition Model was the DDR "DOT" I also didn't care for that stupid eye relief and how finicky it is. It was not a huge problem though as I do verify my head position on the stock for each shot. The dot though was something I could just not live with. It simple covers or obscures too much of the X Ring for either F-Class or for sure Benchrest.
I believe that Nightforce will remedy this and offer a better ( it couldn't be worse) choice of reticles. I have talked to them and they tell me the will be able to change the earlier scopes to any reticle you want ( at a price) when the offer a wider choice.
Is the glass really better on the Competition? Maybe yes and maybe not, I have looked thru both with the rifles setting side by side and can tell very little if any difference, but I would say the edge goes to the Competition. I also wish they had left this scope with a 56 MM lens out front, the side focus is a plus for sure as is the 1/8 click. For me it was all about the reticle...
