Why are factory savage rifles accurate?

Savages floating bolthead certainly trues an otherwise untrue action so to speak but barrels are the speakers of a stereo system. Their barrels must be very accurate as well to maintain the accuracy I've gotten from all my Savage rifles in the past. It's a combined package that makes there rifles shoot very well.

I think savage puts a little more metal on their barrels too. Especially the models known for accuracy most of them come with varmint or thicker barrels. I doubt they would perform any better than some other brands with same profile barrel.

I have a few Savage rifles. They are accurate, but Tikka/Sako make more accurate rifled straight out of the box.
The fit and finish of the Tikka rifles are much nicer than Savage rifles over all. Triggers are much nicer and able to be lightened by just a few dollar spring. Smoother actions also. I can't agree that the Tikka rifles are necessarily more accurate in all cases. You may get more accurate rifles with Tikka if you shot equal numbers of each but in general, Savage makes an exceptionally accurate out if the box rifle. Hard to day every Tikka will give half MOA accuracy but most do. Just as most Savage Rifles will also. Not a big fan of Tikka rings or the Recoil lug setup. That all said, I don't buy factory rifles ever at this point in life. I build what I want. So when someone says a Krieger barrel out shoots a Bartlein, I say the same thing. Some do and some don't.

I purchased a Savage Elite Precision in 300WM and it is super value for what it is. I replaced the trigger with JRAD and it is even a better rifle now.
I built a new 6.5 PRC on Savage SA large shank action with 30" barrel. 1-mile capable with 145-155gr bullets. I am happy with both.

Some scenarios with Savage, and upgrade on the stock and the trigger will get some positive gains. Not as much with Tikka rifles

Action alone is $460
I paid 350 for my savage 10t from cabelas. 100 bucks off sale and 100 bucks rebate. Gotta love it. When sales and rebates line up I usually buy one and sell off the bits I don't want.

Just got a 110 tactical with a 4-16 diamond back tactical+ rings for 800 to my ffl after rebate. Selling off everything but the bolt and action would have me in at under 100 bucks for the bolt and action. That's the way to do it.

SHHHHH!!!! LOL

.....maybe the Savage owners shoot MORE, because they only paid $250????!!!???

Serious!
Amen, bought my savage long action 223 for $250 and put a Steven's 223 1/9 twist $90. Consistently shoots 1/2 moa or 1/3moa with 69 sierra tmks. I just don't understand it truthfully. That is also with stock non accutrigger.

When I decided to start shooting 600 yard F-TR I bought a Savage 11 Varmint with a 24" barrel in 223 Rem. It came with the Wyeld chamber and a 1:7 twist. The plastic stock was anything but stiff but with a F-Class bipod and a 80 grain Sierra MK it took me to Sharpshooter. Restocked in a Boyds and a X-Caliber 1:7 bull barrel I made Expert. Finally switched to a new bolt head in 6BR-Norma with a Northland Criterion 1:8 28" bull barrel and made Master shooting F-Open. Everything on the action is still stock except the bolt head, even the Acu-Trigger. Both old 223 barrels are still going last I heard. The first to a friend of my gunsmith and the second sold here. The first barrel was a copper mine after a Match but still was a 0.5 MOA rifle when I kept up with the wind which wasn't easy with the 24" barrel.

People always talk about how accurate factory savages usually are out of the box, despite the bores looking truly terrible.

Does anyone one know what Savage does right that tends to make them so accurate so often?
Button rifled barrels combined with the ability to set the headspace more accurately

I bought the Savage 112 338 Lapua rifle from a buddy (Randy Wise) that set the ELR World Record in 2019 with the factory 26" barrel. Other than an ARS chassis it's still stock. He told me before that match it had one of the worst looking barrel and chamber he'd ever scoped but it shot incredible so he went with it with good results.

I worked up a load with H1000 since I couldnt find any Retumbo that he used with a 300 gr bullet, I used 285s and it's killer to a mile. The brass has fine marks on it from the rough chamber. Thought about changing it out for a 30" but as long as it keeps shooting I'll leave well enough alone. I also have numerous other Savages and they all shoot great.

Back in the Day when they 1st came out I bought a 338 BA, worked up a load when I really did not know what I was doing, that was deadly out to a mile. So much I used to bring my kid out she was 14 and let her ring steel 36X24 out to a mile. The Snobs on the Hide called BS, no one could hit steel all day long at a mile! I had to post a duel Video of her letting the shot fly, and the target shaking, then the steel ringing seconds later. It's probably still out there on You Tube somewhere. Have a great day.

Only thing that Salvage has going for them is the barrel nut. This goes a long way, everything else is pretty sloppy and any honest Salvage owner will tell you it's on the short list of upgrades.
