Who makes the best 17 caliber barrel blanks

It has long been over due and want to build a 17 caliber Remington. I have looked at others and the 17 Remington it is. Started a little research on it and seems that their are not many who make the barrel blanks. It will eventually be a donor Tikka for the project that is going to get rebarreled. What barrel manufacturers are most people going with for these builds? Right now I am looking to use the 25 grain bullets for my hunting needs.

Plus 1 on the Douglas, as per Todd Kinder (formerly Small Caliber News). That is where I'm going, for a 1in9 twist. I can only hope it shoots as well as my original factory barrel, that I shot out with the now discontinued 30 grain flat based Bergers. I miss that bullet. Love 17's.

You've got me thinking....I may still have a couple of boxes of those 30gr Bergers stored away. As I have not shot my .17 Rem in many years I will try to dig them up and let you have them. Can't promise anything though.

John Krieger told me a few years back at the Dallas Safari Club show that he bought a 17 cal Shilen because they didn’t make them. I thought that was pretty cool of him to share that.

I have never had anything built through the years smaller than a 22cal. rifle. I do have a custom 17HMR I squirrel hunt with and use for other smaller critters. I always felt a little under gunned using it out any further than 125 yards and have had the need to always fill the void between the 17HMR and the 14 twist 22-250 that I use for dusting the smaller stuff.

I have heard that PAC-NOR super match barrels are good and have never used a Shilen barrel. Back in the day I use to use only Hart barrels, never tried a Shilen out.

Of the shooters that I know personally that are very happy with their 17 cal customs...... Lilja. Wouldn't surprise me if they have them in stock ready for shipment in a varmint contour. WD

They do in fact keep them in-stock. Lilja is the way to go.

I used a bunch of Lothar Walther several years ago during a small caliber kick. They always shot incredibly well, and probably at a bit better price than others mentioned. I’ve also used several Shilen and they also shot well.
