USPS
pack it like a gorilla will escape from the zoo and use it to beat on cars with
I use PVC pipe with PVC end caps
Please dont glue the end caps on (rolls eyes)
self tapping screws taped over work well
------------------
Alternatively, to reduce worry from rolling on a conveyor
shape a cardboard box into a long triangle and use Foam Pool Noodles to pack the barrel in.
---------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: Have been informed - Triangle box upcharge cost more, Use Square box
---------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe even pack both ends with plywood cut to shape to prevent the barrel from popping out
Several customers have had their barrel lost for not packing the ends right
Also tape your address to the barrel just in case this happens.
I have seen them turn up eventually if the item itself has the address taped to it also
Good practice for all our gun items since much of our stuff is Unobtainable ever again
or Too costly to replace, such as Thompson Contender barrels

I have shipped and recieved hundreds of barrels. Most of them by Fedex. Single barrels, I like the heavy cardboard tubes with metal end inserts. After inserting the inserts crimp and tape the cardboard. Putting name and address on the barrel is a good idea. The barrel needs to be packed so it has absolutly no movement. Any movement and it will bash its way out. For multiple barrel orders, I made wooden crates that the customer returned.

It should turn up eventually

I used to do that, however with the new USPS rates, it is much cheaper to use a rectangular box. If you still want to ship it in the PVC, then put that into a rectangular box for shipping. The upcharge for a long rectangular box is only $4. The upcharge for a non-cubic box is upwards of $10 now.

Also, make sure you are using the online "Click and Ship" vs going to the PO for postage. It will save you a good amount of money doing it that way.

I just received one from a major manufacturer. Triangle box with good fiber strapping tape, surprised it had a little end to end movement in the box. They used UPS, maybe for reliability reason’s.

PVC shatters on occasion. I will not use it. YMMV
Well I suppose it could, but I still also use Foam noodles to pack the barrel inside
3" Black ABS actually, I'll run my truck over a piece and test it (White PVC Sch 40 is kind of brittle)
A little more stout than just carbdboard right?
But as HandgunHtr said (Also pack THAT in a cardboard box)
The main problem I see is cardbaord alone gets ripped so easily with something that has as much mass as a barrel, the PVC doesnt let loose from the inside.

Thank you for that!
Good info

barrels and most anything else will arrive intact IF YOU pack them well. That means no shortcuts
Use very stiff tubes or PVC pipe that are plugged sealed, taped, reinforced etc on the ends then put that inside a box.

Pirateship is Easy as pie! Offers you choices of carriers and rates when you enter your package info
Quality digital shipping scales are cheap as dirt on Amazon--accurate weights and measurements keep after the fact rate changes to zero and you have a handy record of all your shipping at your fingertips. Don't cheat UPS weights--if they catch it later you pay a big penalty just be accurate

Shipping tape and supplies are cheap on amazon

I haven't had any problems sending them either UPS or FedEx. I always use either a rectangular or a triangular box. If you package a barrel in something round, it's going to fall off a conveyor at some point and bust out the end.

Bc’z turned me on to these guys, I’m too stupid to come up with it by myself but they are certainly much less expensive .

NEVER ship in a round tube or PVC pipe only.
It will roll and fall off the belts or slides get damaged or delayed.
Always make sure there is NO movement of item either.
A little extra tape or packing goes a long ways. It's cheaper than a damaged
pkg. or loss of item.

USPS!! They have a 4" square box maybe 36" long that YOU can cut to the length YOU want. Barrel packed in a Wally World foam Pool Noddle, zip ties every 6" or so with extra length on the ends and zipped so the barrel can't come out of the foam, stuffed into the square shipping box. Gorilla tape wrapped will NEVER come apart!!
To and from whomever and box is STILL in good shape. Square box won't roll. ;) I use PVC pipe tubes for storage at home.

Wrapped snug in bubble wrap and stuffed inside 2" PVC pipe 8" over barrel length; with 4" of bubble wrap wadded up at each end. YES!! do glue both end caps in place. Your gunsmith has a tubing cutter, and just needs to cut at the end of the cap.
I put NOTHING past the destructive capabilities of the USPS or any other carrier other than the front seat of my Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd.

I use the same shipping containers as the barrel manufacturers. I think they know a thing or two about shipping barrels.
Barrel #1 they shipped in a triangular heavy duty card board box.
Barrel #2 was shipped in a 2” square X 36” heavy duty box.
Both were packed tight so the barrel couldn’t act as a slide hammer and blow the end of the box.

Year ago I shipped 2 separate benchrest barrels. I used PVC sch 40, glued a cap on one end and screw on cap on the other end. When I received the barrels back, one made it in good condition, the second barrel arrived with the PVC tube broken.
