Which would you choose and why???

HI
Which would you choose and why??? 375/284 or 338/284???

I have the option to build the 375/284 or buy an already working 338/284 with dies and scope etc for about $1300, but it has been on sale for months.

The 375 will be built on a long action Win 70 and should come within a couple of hundred FPS of the 375 H&H with less recoil and more load efficiency.
I have everything required to build this rifle except a barrel.

The 338/284 will be above the 338/06 but below the 338 Win Mag in performance usual bullet weights.

Rifle will be used on everything inc camels, donkeys and buff,if I ever get a chance at one)

So which would you choose and why???

Thanks guys

Camels

Thought about a 338-284 myself...338 with a 210 ballistic tip ought to work well :thumb:

A bud has a 416-284 that pounds...on both ends ;)

Sounds like you are in Australia.

Sort of a mized bag, in my neck of the woods there is a .338 bullet available for almost every application including the very nice Lapua and Sierra match bullets. In a .338 chambering you'd be able to get better velocities to match up with the excellent ballistics.

The buffalo give me a little pause, don't know how tough yours are. There are excellent big game .338 bullets available that should give sufficient penetration, the Barnes and A-frames come to mind. But the extra throw weight and diameter of a .375 might be in order for buffalo.

Hi i am building a long range rifle for the same game as you camels and donkeys and will hopefully use it on Buff's it will be a 338-300RUM i think your 338-284 would be better than the 375 as it shoots flatter than the 375. you need a flat trajectory for camels and donkeys as they can be out a fair way in the desert. You can load the 180gr plastic tip bullets at 3000fps for these and then when you want to go for a Buff load the 300gr Woodleigh at somewhere around 2400fps and they will be sufficiant for your purpose. I think you have to build this rifle for its primary use and look at a way you can use it for the seccondary use eg Buff.
Hope this helps but definetly go for the 338 as it has a lot bettter bullet selection to match your game as the 375 does not have a relatively light weight bullet that will hold togethor on game with a flat trajectory

338 /284 with seat out bullet, 338 bullet are very long ) can be far superior to 375, heavier and lower BC )

as refrence 338/06, same water capcity as 338/284 ) is outstanding accuracy in hunting purpose at 500 yards

good shooting

i think that the difference is negligible at this point . allthough i kind of like the 375. it will definitely do anything. i think you have to look at cost, of parts, supplies, and bullets, in the long run as well as bbl life, 375 will live longer than a 338
