Which Scope / Which Recticle on NF for benchrest

this is for you benchrest and looooong range shooters. I'm looking to get into benchrest shooting and fixin to buy a NXS 8x32x56 or a 12x42x56 I here a lot about the NP-2dd but the dot subtensions looks a little large for 1000 yard precision would it cover the whole target ? I like the NP-r2 also it has fine cross hash marks but looking for some input from someone who has used both. thanks for any info would be greatly apreciated

krktractor: As long as you're going with the same size & weight, go for the 12-42x. The extra 10X will be appreciated when you need it.

Four of my Benchrest NF's are the NP-2DD and one is the NP-R2. Like them both & would have a hard time saying one is better than the other. The hold-off hash marks come in handy so for longer distances I would have to say that may be a better choice. The 2DD's are less cluttered and are fine for closer distances. Have never used the small dot on the 2DD, main, center dot does it all, but my distances are limited to 600 yards.

You can't go wrong with either.

I prefer the NPR2 due to the fact I use my scopes for double duty, both varminting and benchrest. The multiple reticle design of the NPR2 comes in very handy in the field. I would think this would also make a scope more attractive at the time you want to sell it.

Until several years ago, NF did offer a fine crosshair in the BR 12-42. I had one in a NSX model, and it was great for holding off. I think they are still availabe in the NXS. Wish I had not sold mine. The two BR models I have now are NP2DD

My activities involve nothing but paper targets at a maximum 600 yards, no "live" targets, but I have often seen the advantage of the NP-R2 with the hold-off hash marks. There will be times when I want to do some group testing at 2 & 300 yards, but because of range conditions (crowded, limited time available, etc) don't want to go downrange to put up targets. Often I can find targets posted with only a few bullet holes, and left by the previous user.

With the R2 it's a simple matter to place the appropriate hash marks on the each of the corners of the target paper, and putting 5 shot groups in the areas that have no previous bullet holes. With the 2DD there would not be as many choices, so add one point in favor of the R2 reticle.

I been thinking of buying a NF also , I would like to know at 42x with any of the reticles anyone has used , have you looked at a 100 and 200 varmit for score target and how is view of the X can you even see it or is the line value to heavy, I know a .125 dot will work but I would like to use it for other types of shooting, So I would like the moa type reticle.

Re: Use the bottem dot

On the NF NP2DD after 300 yds I use the lower dot. It fits inside the 10 ring and requires less clilcks to get there.

I have the 2 DD in a12 x 42 BR series, But IF offered I would like the NP-R1 vs the NP-R2.

If they do discontinue the NXS it will probably be replaced with the new Competition scope..
I wish all my Nightforce scopes had the new DDR reticule in them..
IMHO it's their best reticule for what I do..
Kinda like the NP-2DD with 2 extra hash marks, whats not to like "O)

The new competition is nice , I went to their site, I didn't see if those hash marks or MOA or MIL, and how many MOA or Mil
