Which factory action for .338 Lapua?

A friend of mine is jonesin' for a .338 Lapua but is unsure of which action to start with. I've tried to talk him into something smaller but he has his heart set on the Lapua. Has anyone done this on a factory action or it too much to ask? He has a Savage in .300 Win. mag but doesn't know if it will stand it.

Thanks
AK

Uhm...not the answer I was looking for.

If I understood the video correctly, he doesn't need such a rifle and wouldn't know how to use it if he had one. Since when did we let need stand in our way, and whose to say he isn't a great shooter.

If you don't have an answer to the question, move along, someone else might be able to help, instead of wasting my time.

whose to say he isn't a great shooter.

If [he] was then he wouldn't be dreaming of owning/building one of those and looking for advice about what to build it off of - he'd already know.

I most certainly have an answer to the question, there are actions out there capable of it. Perhaps you could do some research on the custom actions page on this site? You know, the one you're on . . . http://www.accurateshooter.com/gear-reviews/custom-actions/ There are also plenty of factory rifles chambered in it that even the most novice of Guns & Ammo readers know about from the advertisements.

A good shooter knows how to put bullets into little groups, not necessarily how to build them.

I understand that the answer MIGHT be found with enough searching, but I was simply looking for a quick answer.

This post might help some.

The case head is very large and I think it creates issues when the boltface is enlarged to take it

Thank you very much for the post, it came in very helpful. I should've searched for myself, and I really appreciate your help.

AK,
I know Remington makes a .338 Lapua, as does Savage and Sako in factory rifles. There may even be others. It is a large case head and there are many here that are way smarter than I who believe the Remington action isn't large enough for the Lapua. I am not going to get in that argument. That aside, most of the custom action manufacturers here make an action for the Lapua sized case.

I'd suggest looking at the 338 Norma Magnum, shorter than the Lapua with reportedly better performance due to efficient case and neck design and dimensions but it still has the massive case head. My dream 338 will be an 338 Edge which is a 300 Rem Ultra Mag necked up to .338. The RUM is a big case and necking it to 338 makes it better while still working on the standard actions. Oh, and the .338-378 Weatherby is out there too.....

if you are looking for a bolt gun rem . 700 a mag. action or any long action cal. can be converted to 338 Lap.
i am looking into what i can do with a Howa action . i will have to modify the magazine box but i think it will be do able .
I would say savage but there would be a few models i would stay away from . T.R.

I'm working on a wildcat from the 338 Lapua case. Using a Weatherby Mark V action that currently has a 30-378 barrel on it. The Lapua cases extract well. Should work for the magazine as well, but haven't tried since mine has a single shot follower. Going for a switch barrel setup.

Was speaking with a very well respected long range shooter and gunsmith last week at the SHOT show about this very subject. He said do not build this on a Remington 700 action, because there just was not enough strength left in the barrel tenon and action with such a large cartridge. There are custom actions made to handle these large calibers. Jerry Stiller makes some of his actions large enough to handle the 338 Lapua and 408 Cheytac.

I saw what was labeled as a Remington 40XS in 338 Lapua at the Cabela's Gun Cabinet in Phoenix Arizona yesterday.

They do, in limited quanities, and I think it is marketed to the LE crowd. I don't know the model # off hand. I see new ones every once in a while in racks at gun shops. HS stock, detachable mag, muzzle break. And as expected, all in that sexy flat black paint Remington loves. I wanted one for a while, but like heartburn, it passed eventually ;)
