Russ Haydon's Shooter Supply also sells a Mitutuoyo ball mike w/ a modified anvil... not that cheap, though. Heck, I thought that was less than the price of the original un-modified version?!?

You can get a Holland for $75, or save more money and buy a cheap made in China one for less than $30.
I would never trust any of them completely, regardless of cost. Nothing beats measuring a loaded round with a mic just to be sure. With loaded fresh neck turned brass I measure every one just to be on the safe side. After that I'm sure they're right.

Funny that you praise the Holland and then bash on the Chiwanese stuff... most of those 'designer label' tools like that are made... same place, just some $$$ because they have a specific vendors name stuck on it. IIRC some of the Mitutuoyo stuff is made in Brazil, fwiw. Manufacture of a lot of that stuff is so decentralized anymore it isn't even funny. Starrett always had the golden reputation, plus being U.S. made, but I've been reading thru a few sites of some tool shops that sell and repair/replace a bunch of brands and the words they have to say about the newer Starrett calipers and micrometers ain't that great.

Also, FWIW, you can get almost exactly the same stand that Holland sells thru Grizzly Machinery,www.grizzly.com) for about half I think. Probably made in the same Chiwanese plant, just doesn't have the designer 'name' label on it.

YMMV,

Monte,

I don't think anybody bashed the made in Asia stuff. On the contrary it's a viable alternative for anyone not wishing to spend the bucks on the high priced spread. Some very good buys can be found at Harbor Freight and other places.
IMHO it's pretty tough to consistently get the same reading when you're trying to measure ten thousandth's regardless of what tool is used. That's why I said the only safe way is to measure your loaded rounds to determine if you have enough clearance in a tight necked chamber with each bullet you use. Pressure rings can vary .0005 or more from brand to brand of bullets.
Safety first, and attention to detail always come first.

I use a Sinclair MIC-4 with a 0.0001 dial and a dome tip for case sorting, and then replace the dial with a Fowler 0.0001 micrometer head with a measuring ball,0.1000 ball with a little rubber boot to hold it in position) for measuring turned necks.
Since I had both measuring tools the only cost was the MIC-4.
