Which bushing die?

Hey,
What brand of bushing dies do you all have the best sucess with, RCBS gold medal or Redding type S?
If you use Redding do you like the less fancy version or the competition model?
Thanks,
Croberts

RCBS is good for a 30-06 deer rifle. For a target rifle I would get Redding or Forster. What caliber are you loading for ?

I have a .243 Rem 700 with a Shilen Match bbl. It is mainly used for groundhog and deer hunting. But I love just to get out and shoot paper. It will not be used for a match, but I would like to get it to shoot better. I shoot on average .3-.4 at 150 yds. I just wonder if bushing sizing will help with the long 107's and 108's that it likes? Now I am using a RCBS Neck sizing die.
What you you all think? Is it worth the time and money?
Thanks

Croberts,

What's going on? I just picked up a 6mm BR and have had great success with the Redding Type S Bushing Die for it. I also had the Redding Competition bushing neck die, with micrometer adjust) for my 22-250 that i sold recently and i liked it alot also but I don't think it was any more accurate than the "less fancy" type S Die. If you get into splitting hairs, you can adjust the length of the neck that you size using the micrometer die but you won't have that option with the Type S. It will size all the way to just above the base of the neck. Some theorize that a neck that is sized ~1/2 way allows the bullet to stay on center with the bore better making it more accurate but i personally can't justify the extra $$. Both of my two varmint rifles, this 6mm BR, Rem700 action with Shilen match select barrel and the 25-06 you've seen first hand) are capable of .25 MOA accuracy when using the reloading setup i have described. If you are jamming them in the lands then I imagine either will work fine. I really like the titanium nitride coated bushings and it just makes everything a breeze when playing with neck tension.

These guys are right...somewhere around .002-.003 neck tension will probably be the way to go but you might have to play around with it. My 22-250 liked about .005 neck tension while my 25-06 only likes .002. My 6mm BR really likes about .002 also. I am going to venture a guess that the RCBS Neck die is putting roughly .002 neck tension on your cases as that seems to be about standard from the stock RCBS neck dies i have messed with. How is your runout looking on your sized brass? How about on your seated rounds?

I'm getting no more than .0015 runout on my necksized brass using the Redding Type S Bushing Neck sizing die in a Rockchucker press for the 6mm BR.

I have heard great things about the lee collet dies but have never used one before. Many shooters swear by them and it might be a cheaper option to test it out.

When it warms up, i'll have to get back down there to do a little groundhog hunting with you. Those were good times.

Ruck

Ruck, he would be able to size a portion of the neck with the type "S" bushing die. The instructions from Redding says to back the decapping assembly out the desired amount and then lengthen the decapping holder out of the top cap. I have several of my dies adjusted this way. Bill

Bill,

you're right. thanks for clarifying that. it's made a little easier by the micro-adjust with the micrometer die but not impossible with the type S like we've got.
