Which brand of barrel to use?

I'm going to be using a rem sendero for the build. It's going to be a 280 ack. I'm going to be using this as a hunting rifle. Whos barrel and where to buy?

Thanks
Kevin

Kevin,
I am going to builb a 280AI as well and there is no doubt as to what barrel for me, A Hart is going on it but any of the premier barrel makers would be equally as good I imagine.

Kevin,
I am sorry I never finished my post, its my birthday today and the wife made me a birthday brunch I had to run and eat.You can get many premium barrels from Midwayusa or Brownells among others. there is a lot of good info on rifle barrels here on 6br's home page down towards the bottom of the page on the left hand side. I have several of them and they all shoot equally good I just prefer Hart, but not for any particular reason other than it was my first custom barrel and it WORKED so I have mainly used them since. One of my best shooting guns I own sports a Shien barrel. After the gun was first built I couldn't say enough bad about Shilen because the gun wouldn't shoot, I gave up on it, a couple years later I had another smith look at it and the action had been improperly tuned, once that was taken care of WOW!! what a shooter.

I have used Lilja, Broughton, and Shilen (have one Shilen 6.5 barrel on a Mauser 96 that is my most accurate barrel so far) to date and all worked well for my match and/or hunting pursuits. Frankly they all have their fans and (very few) detractors. I recently tried a Douglas chrome moly for a Low Wall project and it was full of carbon pits and holes so I might not try them again but even that barrel shoots really well once there is some fouling in it. Ask your gunsmith if he has any blanks in stock as that saves you some time if Bruno's, Brownell's or Midway don't have what you are looking forward to.
Great choice in caliber!

Lilja, Brux, Broughton, Shilen, and Krieger are barrels I have used thru the years. IMHO I don't think you can go wrong with any of the domestic custom barrel manufacturers.

One thing that can influence your choice is turn-a-round time from order to receipt of barrel. If you are in a hurry Bruno's Shooting Supply comes to mind as he has Krieger, Hart and a few others in stock in various profiles and caliber/twist rates. Most of the other manufacturers are 12 weeks minimum for delivery. Or keep watching the marketplace on here for barrels. Good luck.

quick question when you seen pits did you contac to see why because ithink it is really possible that barrel could possibly not been oiled after it was cleaned after stress relieved a over sight if you would complained i am sure they would have replaced it .

My 2 cents I would try hart and shilen, best bang for the buck.If you and wayne are gonna build a .280 ackley ,I have the reamer print you need.

jon,
I am building mine on mt f-class savage, for some long range fun.
Don't see to many people using them, you can get Lapua brass so I am going to give it a go for the real windy days on the range.
It may not work out but I'll never know if I don't try.

Over the years I've bought more Hart barrels than any of the others: Shilen, Krieger and Bartlein, and have never had a bad one of any brand. I've called Hart, placed the order, specifying the contour, and usually within 4 weeks the brown truck arrives. Excellent company to deal with, selling a top quality product. My gunsmith was hooked on brand "X", got burned really bad with a bad barrel, the maker would do nothing to correct the problem, and my 'smith now uses Hart unless the customer requests something else.

All the barrels mention above are top of the line. Most of the barrel makers in the US produce great barrels. If it's for hunting, Then I would say innne minnie moo!! ;D If any of my barrels are going to be used for comp. Then I'm just a little more picky! ;)

All of the named barrels makes are good. I go for the one I can get the fastest. But my top pick is Krieger.
