Which BAT action

I'm considering building a 6mm dasher with a Shehane ST 1000 weighted stock and a BAT dual port action (I'm a lefty). The rifle will have 1.25" diameter 30" barrel and weight around 28lb. What model and diameter BAT dual port action do you suggest would be suitable as I don't have the knowledge about the different BAT models and diameters and their application to what I wish to build?

I have been reading the articles featuring Sam Hall and see that he has used the BAT MB dual-port (multi-flat) action for this type of rifle.

If you can give me some information on the BAT models it would be greatly appreciated.

I use an MB. I believe if you call BAT they will tell you the MB is better with 1.25 Dia. Barrels. The M needs a 1.35 Dia barrel. Both actions are externaly the same. MB has I believe a 1" shorter bolt the the M. Bedding length the same. My rifle has worn several 30" 1.25 straight barrels with no problem. Also the M uses 1 1/16 threads versus 1 threads for the mb. Sorry guys correction 1 1/8 versus 1 1/16

Bedding length is the same, but the MB has about 1" of no threads on the very end of the action..

According to the BAT site, The MB has a longer action body (more bedding area than a B) which would be equal to the M but has a B length bolt so it would cycle a little faster than an M. Last fall when I was looking to build one, I was looking to buy an MB multi-flat because of the extra bedding area. I ended up buying a complete rifle used with a Bat SV in a 17# light gun.

I'm partial to the 3-lug BAT actions and have two 3LL147OCTPIC and one 3L14OCTPIC. Having an integrally machined rail (available only on octagon and multi-flat) eliminates one problem source.

I really don't see the need for such a long barrel for a Dasher, but i use a model B 1.350 round and a HV.@ 28"plus a brake. I did well with it at 16.9 lb. and have model B in 1.530 round for a heavy with a 1.250 barrel @ 28"to try this year. It should be around 22 lb. I too am left handed and use left and left, i like the port on the off side away form my eye, just incase...... jim

naagren,

I have had a M, it is big for a 6Dasher. I have a B 1.55", it will take about any barrel you want to put on it.

Nick,

I had a M 1.55" for a 6BR and 6BRX. It started with 1.250" 30" long 22 lb gun. I rebuilt It later to a 17lb to shoot the same gun in light and heavy gun for 600 yd Benchrest. The M was too big for the BR and BRX. I have a B 1.55" now, works better.

Remember if you get a Bat made to shoot a Dasher it will use a Sako extractor and when the bolt is closed it will be in the raceway..... and you are next in line....... jim

Steve, 3 lugs don't have lugs larger than the bolt body, just two lug actions. I only use 2 lug actions but with the short cases they use a Sako extractor to get them to eject correctly. Three lugs are a little tuff on opening compared to the two lug actions and upset the gun in the bags if you shoot free recoil. I have seen some that were better than the others but as a rule two lugs are smoother actions. Both shoot good ....... jim

I always wondered why they don't make a 2 lug action like a 3 lug with no raceways? It would be for safety or am i missing something....... jim

I have had 2 B`s an M and an MB, all to shoot Dasher sized cases. I love my MB with DS parts, 1.530 round. I can make 17# with ST1000 and 1.250 @26" or go BIG with weights in stock.
