Which barrel do you recommend

Hey all,
I have a 22-250 Winchester heavy varmint model 70 that in it's day shot .2's with hand loads. I have killed a truckload of chucks and dogs over the years and it is showing it's age. Sending it to favorite gun smith Dave Bruno to be barreled and tuned up and here lies the question, what barrel would you have installed? I have has a Krieger in 6x47 lapua that Dave built for me and it shot like crazy but I bought a Nesika rifle in 7mm mag and it shoots 1/2" groups with a Douglass air gauge barrel. So what would you choose for a barrel?

Thanks
Stosh

You just can't beat the X-Calibers of late for quality, price and delete very time.

A very, very seasoned shooting Bud of mine has 3 in the 6mm and under and only one has shown minimal coppering and he is pushing hard, to find the fastest node possible w/o wrecking brass. The last XC pics he sent me were twos, ones and zeros - three shot groups doing load development at the range w a bad headwind. Nothing in or above .3".
40 shots b4 cleaning and nothing blue on the patch. Do know he is an ex BR competitor.
I have several I ordered last week and expect them well before month's end - .20 through .308.

When you have czeched out X-Caliber's site, one of the things not mentioned: You will notice the VERY attractive pricing and lack of several months of potential extra waiting. Superb quality bbls for less bux.

Easy, just tell him what you want to do with the rifle, paper, chucks, etc, what bullets you want to be shooting, and have him choose the barrel, twist, and brand let him use what he would use for himself at whatever price point you're thinking.

The gunsmith could really care less what barrel you choose, unless he is a dealer or has barrels in stock. You'll get as many answers as their are barrel makers. I have several Bartlein barrels that all shoot great, I also have a Hart that shoots great and have had a few Krieger's that shot great. I've had a couple others that shot OK but had other issues, but several other people use the same maker without issue so I'm not going to mention any names.

On a varmint style rifle chances are whatever barrel you choose will shoot better than what the guy squeezing the trigger can equal. Pick any quality barrel and stick with a gunsmith you trust you'll be fine. If your sold on what barrel maker is the best you'd be wise to see what's winning in a shooting discipline that matches close to what you except to be doing in the field and go with it

I have been very happy with a Lilja 3 groove on my 22 BR. I have a Krieger on a 30 BR that also shoots well. Sounds like I may need to check out the X-Caliber's for my next build. Good Luck

Yes, But he asked me the question first. Thought I would get input from the forum as well as my smith.

That's because it's a double edged sword to the gunsmith...if you go get the barrel and it doesn't shoot then it must be something he did wrong. If he recommends a barrel and it doesn't shoot then it's his fault for recommending it and most people will still think he did something wrong.
The fact of the matter is that it makes no difference which brand or which guy at whatever company makes it, the chances are pretty low, but you still may not get a good barrel. No one tries to make a bad barrel, they all want every one to shoot fantastic. I have to say that when you get one that don't want to shoot from a custom maker it generally isn't jumping right out at you as to why. I have one right now that wont group better than 2 1/2" and it was not cheap...the bore appears flawless.
Getting a hummer of a barrel is a matter of how lucky you are, but the odds are stacked in your favor with a top name custom maker.

I also would recommend X-Caliber. Have 3 up & running and they all shoot very well, broke in literally in just a couple shots and don't copper, plus they are economical and quick delivery. One other thing you need to shop for is a gunsmith with specific M70 experience if it is CRF because of the required extractor cut. I don't think this is a consideration on the post '64 push feed actions. Have fun!

Brux or Bartlein

Even X-Caliber is a great choice with the 2 mentioned above.

I have built tac drivers with all the above. It gets down to me and my trigger finger as all these barrels shoot better than I can shoot them.
