Which action there are too many?

I have been competing for a year or so on tuned up remingtons off a harris bi-pod and have done pretty good even won a 500 yard f-class match (even the biggest dipsh*ts get lucky), But I just cant seem to get the accuracy where I want it yeah I can shoot .5-.75 100 yard groups but I have never been able to get the bugholes that all of the real competitive shooters accomplish, which I believe is what causes the horrible 9 scores that seem to haunt me (miss the 10 ring by 1/4inch). I have taken 6 months off cause of the arrival of my baby boy and I am ready to go at it again so yes I will compete with my remington for now as I still need alot of wind reading practice. but I would like to order a custom and start putting together componets for the build! Some of the customs come with nothing, some come with triggers, some dont seem to have a recoil lug? The only spec i have so far is it is for a F-class rifle. Been looking at the Banard P, Bat model B and the viper SS but very welcome to any suggestions!

Thank you

Shaun,

I have a Bat B and a Stiller Diamondback both are great actions. But my next one will be a Baity. they are right up there with a Bat. http://baityscustom.com/

Take a look at the Defiance Actions. V.G. delivery times & Glenn and Lisa are real nice folks to deal with.

Defiance Machine all the way. Great people, great service, unbelievable service infact and there actions are frightening.
+++100 for Glenn and Lisa, mega products and service and unbeatable prices too.

Wow kind of surprised that Defiance took the lead in votes so fast I will look into them more!
It is just too hard to decide.

No need to be surprised about Defiance! Glen started Nesika Bay actions and now started Defiance. Superb build quality and great pricing for a custom action. Other than BAT, Defiance would be my first choice too.

I was just being a smart ass. Take a look at the equipment used by the winning competitors in whatever disipline you want to shoot. In short range benchrest, BAT and Panda actions dominate and have done so for a number of years.

Actions are fun to talk about, but I think they are pretty far down the list of things holding back an F-Class shooter. If the goal is to improve your scores, I'd focus on your ammo, barrels, wind, and technique first. As I've gotten better, it has been like a light-bulb going on realizing how many 9s come from my poor technique and those darned wind flutters. Of course, I do have a "whatever" action, so maybe that's why I'm not worried about it. :)

In all reality, I doubt that any of the top custom actions will really be much more accurate than any of the others. Most all are machined so precisely that it really doesn't matter whose name is on the side, it will basically do the same thing. It's a matter of who makes an action with the features you want, in the size you want and can deliver when you need it. Some actions are better suited for certain disciplines and whatnot, but as long as you don't try to hang a 30" HV barrel on an aluminum action, than I think you'll be OK.

That said, I would love to have a BAT or a Defiance action downstairs in my machine shop. ;D

I have had great results with a barnard. Got it with a Kreiger 1:13 tube and bedded the thing myself (first time doing this). First group was about .3" at 115 m. Played with loads and this was the best. Can squeeze a .2" group when im lucky. VERY HAPPY WITH THE BARNARD. Comes with an awesome trigger too.

That being said, im sure i would have similar results with any 'custom' action. You have to remember that its the whole package that shoots. Just because you have a great action, if the bedding and barrel is lousy, it will not shoot. I got so much advice on my build that i gave up listening to anyone and did what i wanted. I think this is what you have to do.

A good bit of advice i think is to buy one that fits the rem 700 footprint. This way there is a huge range of factory stocks that are just a drop in fit. these stocks range from a few hundred to a few thousand so there is one for every budget

Write a table with how much you have to spend, then what you want... it all adds up a lot quicker than you think. A good action will last a long time, and shoot many barrels out. Good glass is essential too. Barrels can be shot out relatively quickly, so if you have to save money, i would almost suggest saving it here (dont get a cheap barrel, just perhaps not the most expensive). You will shoot it out in a couple of years, at which stage the extra practice will really help. then it will be worth spending the extra on an awesome barrel ( i like kreiger and Truflight, but any premium barrel shoots well)

Also, dont underestimate the advantages of a good bipod/benchrest. It holds it much steadier than a harris does. I think a good bipod would be a great start rather than a whole new rifle. And it will be money well spent as if your building a custom rifle, im sure you will want one eventually.
