Which 6mm ?

I'm going to rebarrel a Ruger #1 to one of the 6mm's . This is my all purpose rifle for g-hogs, varmints, and deer . My question is, which 6mm - .243, 6BR, 6Dasher, or ? . What do you guys suggest. Also, round must be recoil friendly due to a physical disability.

When you said recoil friendly.6 BR hast to be first. Larry

I would base it on how far I wanted to shoot. If I was shooting 400 or farther it definitely would be a Dasher. I wouldn't think you could even tell the difference in recoil between a Dasher and BR. I would put on a break so I could see hits. Matt

try a 6-6.5 x 47 Lapua. It is the best of both worlds. You could launch 100gr. hunting bullets at a comfortable (with a 26" barrel) 3050 and 3100 is NOT out of the question. Then lighter bullets would be screaming out of the barrel for smaller varmints... Besides all that, it is as accurate as any 6mmRem, .243 etc..

One thing to keep in mind, the no 1 don't have the extraction leverage of a bolt gun. So if br ballistics are satisfactory, I would go dasher and run it down there.

I couldn't agree more and you probably could go a little more than a BR and still eject them. Matt

Straight 6 BR. 8 twist. No turn neck. .104 freebore. You will have a lot of versatility, low recoil, good barrel life, zero fire forming and, of course, the stupid easy accuracy that the 6 BR is known for.

I would run the cases over a 6mm expanding mandrel and size them before you load them the first time. The Lapua brass has too much neck tension out of the box.

Here is a good, one size fits all load for you:
Straight 6 BR
Lapua brass
2 thou neck tension
CCI BR4 primer
30.5 gr Varget
Sierra 85 gr HPBT

It is accurate, inexpensive and has great terminal performance on everything from groundhogs to deer. Suggest that you wait on a broadside double lung or other meat saving shot for best satisfaction.

Just an observation... I built a Ruger Number Three in .223 with a 24 Shilen heavy barrel a couple years back. Awesome shooter. After sighting it in my first 200 yard, five round group was the size of my index finger nail... Love this gun BUT unless you intend to shoot a couple of round and let the gun cool off you'll discover the potential for "walking" is very likely... After the first five rounds, subsequent rounds started walking in quarter inch increments upwards. It appears that the way the forearm attaches to the barrel encourages this phenomenon... I hope you have luck with your build!!! Take these comments for what they're worth!!! Like I said, just an observation... XPoutdoorsmen

+1 of the straight 6mm BR,
No fire forming, easy to find a load and lots of barrel life, as mentioned above get a 1:8T and go shoot.

I had a Ruger #1 in 6MM. It had a heavier varmint barrel and sure looked nice. POS.

Spent the better part of two years having every expert under the sun try to get that thing to shoot. One bedding trick and spring cut, remount, trigger change...you name it and it was done.

Darn thing walked in all directions and never really grouped.

In frustration I got rid of it.

If you can get one to shoot the Dasher would be a good thing to get a bit more velocity over the BR for deer.
