My first 6br

Hi guys, I'm just about to get my first 6br made. I'm gonna be using it for varmints and the odd bit of f class.
I wanted to use 70gr Nosler's and 105 a Max's respectively. I realise I will have to compromise one way or another. My question is, would you suggest getting it throated for the 70 grainers and seating the 105's deeper or vice versa?

Cheers
Russ

yes. i'm new to the 6br also and can't stop shooting them...i have two. i am primarily a varmint/paper shooter so i have a 14 twist and one of the pt&gs .2704 neck reamers... neck bushing is .267 and loaded neck is .269 and i rarely need to push the shoulder back and brass growth is nil. i have .040 freebore and REALLY wish i had less since the gun shoots 60-69 gr bergers and most recently 68 watson's. i'm seating .020 into the lands and all bullets with appropriate powder choice will shoot 3 shot groups in the low ones and often in the zeros! i am so spoiled that groups that don't overlap annoy me even thought they measure 1/4 inch...the holes have to touch! granted a fast twist will "shoot" these light bullets but you'll need more freebore or seat deeper in the neck avoiding the neck/shoulder. the 6 mm br's pedigree is for light bullets and short range (100-200). i am able to get 3600 fps with 62 berger euwins using LT32 powder and this gets ghogs at 300 yds easy. long range may be best with the dasher or brx. the solution...chamber both as a switch barrel gun. either way, you will have fun.

My suggestion would be a 1:8 twist, 28-30 long with a 0.100" freebore. This allows you to shoot the 105-107 VLD style bullets with the base of the bullet out of the shoulder neck junction. It is not as critical that you jam the 70s ( in most cases) as it is with the 105/107s. I both of my 1:8 twist have 0.104" FB. They also shoot the 75 VMax well which is my preferred varmint bullet. My 1:10 twist is set up for the 95 BIB with a 0.090" FB. It doesn't shoot the 75 VMax any better. I am running 0.272" necks but the trend lately is 0.2705-0.271" to better match the newer blue box Laupa brass. I set with the old box stuff so no problems for me.

Luck in your choice, Tim

Thanks for the advice guys. What sort of group do you get with the 75 VMax's?
I use the 55 VMax in my .223 Remington which shoots them around 1/2 MOA at 100 but it likes the Nosler's a tiny bit more!

28 '' 1+8 105 fb will work very well . 87 gr to 105 I tried 87 gr at 1000 yd they shot 4' lower then the 105 and they were 150' faster to start. Larry

Using Varget I could get the 75 VMax to 3250 fps. This wasn't a hot load. Groups were 0.6-7" inch range. Never even played with seating depth or neck tension. It was more than good enough for my varmint needs. Luck, Tim

What type of varmints and how far do you plan on shooting? if you are going long you don't need to compromise just shoot a 105 class bullet and be done. One load one bullet makes it easier. Since I built mine I got rid of the 6.5-284 and the BR is the go to gun. It does more than I expected of it.

Optimize for the competition bullet, compromise on the varmint bullet. It's that simple.

if you throat for the 75s you will have to seat the 105 deep - you had better be good at keeping on top of donuts...fundamentally seating bullets into the neck shoulder junction is a bad idea.

I have used the 105 A-max in a 6br on rabbits (very light skinned varmint) to 525 yards and it is still "explosive"...I then used the same load and gun to shoot F-class out to 1k....watch out, I now don't go varminting and just shoot F-class.

IMO just go with the 105 class and be done with it...the only compromise is perceived explosiveness.

I chambered a barrel last spring with the blue box (.2704) reamer. I started shooting it alittle to see if .0014 was enough clearance,it was but it shot not so good.I now have to turn my brass to get .0035 and early testing shows it was smart turning them for more clearance. So my advice to you is to use the .272 reamer and go with it if you dont want to turn brass and I am not the only one who has experienced this problem.

problems with the .2704 reamer? excessive pressure would be my first guess and was my concern when i had mine chambered, but so many were using it and i was not aware of problems. my loads are not excessive and the gun shoots in the twos constantly and frequently in the ones and zeros. i really don't like turning brass and this no turn chamber is the most accurate i'v ever shot. what are the problems? is it a twist rate/bullet weight ( trying to get light bullets to shoot well with a 1 in 8 twist...yes they will, but the lighter ones really shoot best in a slower twist.) is it a jump/jam issue? thanks for the info.
