Which 6mm

Hi Guys
I have a 7 twist 6mm barrel and a stiller Tac 30 action with 308 bolt face.

If you guys had that what would you build, was thinking of 6mm BR but it didn't feed out of my mag (tad short OAL). Thought of the 6.5x47 Lapua necked down, extra length should help mag feeding.

Range is 300 - 600 yds

So what would you build and what length would you make the barrel, benchrest and varmint gun

Cheers and thanks

Two great rounds are the 6XC and its big brother the 6mmSLR. I have had both and still shoot the 6MMSLR. I have 2800+ rounds on a barrel that started life as a 6XC but wanted more poop to try out the 115s so had it rechambered at 1800rds to the SLR. It shot lights out!! I put another 1000rounds through it and pulled the barrel and built a 6BRX for tactical shooting but it did not feed well so I pulled the barrel and was going to rechamber it to the 6SLR.

My smith had my old barrel and had bore scoped it and told me if it was him he would cut the threads off and rechamber that barrel because it still looked damn good and I could use it to get all my brass fire formed. So I did and I can't believe how well the damn thing is shooting!! Its shooting .7 to 1.5" 5 shot groups at 300yds with both H1000 and H4831SC. I plan on staying with H1000 if I can find it because it is so easy on barrels. Remember this barrel has close to 3000rds on it now. SO whats not to like!!

6xc, 6-250, or 6x47L. Each has their own forte and properly smithed & loaded you can't go wrong on any of them. If brass is tough to come by over there I'd opt for the 6-250 as if you can't find brass for that one we're all in trouble. ;) WD

In support of the previous two posters - 6XC and 6SLR. The 6XC is a great cartridge, but if brass availability is an issue (as WyleWD suggested), I would go with the 6SLR which is formed from plain old 243 brass and does not need fire formed.

Thanks for all the info guys, i have decided 6br.

Reason, no brass in Australia for anything else forcat least 4 months.

Thanks for the help

I think the BR is best choice. You shooting steel or F-Class or game?

I have a 6x47L and its a good cal, stable brass, efficent case. I got it as im shooting F-Class out to 1000yds, if I was limiting myself to 600yds, 6BR all the way.

Sarimus: Nothing wrong with the 6BR, good out to 600 yards. Learn to read the wind and it will do it all, unless the winds are really high. What's the big deal with single load?

Brass available without forming, very long barrel & case life, a proven record of accuracy, easy to load, low recoil, etc.

I would take a serious look at this cartridge 6mm super LR
http://www.6mmar.com/Super_LR.html

+1 easy to form cases from .243 win and longer barrel life so I have heard.. 30 degree shoulder and longer neck

Like the others said a straight 6mm BR, could be what your after, easy to find loads, plenty of tried and proven combos on here, There's a lot of experience on here.
Plus 6mm BR brass is easy to get here in Australia at the moment ( just buy a couple of hundred to start with, they'll out last the barrel )

Safe Shooting

Just a word of caution - - some of the 6mm 7" twist barrels are problematic. Never had pressure issues or problems with 7.5"+ twist barrels , but yes with 7" twist barrels. I know of a few cases where people had 7" twist 6mm's and had pressure issues. IMO a 7" twist is just a little too much in some situations where the twist become more like a wall to the bullet than a ramp to start it spinning.
