Which 6mm Cartridge for New Build?

AR Shooter

Silver $$ Contributor
Have decided to build a new F-Class rifle in 6mm. Am thinking either 6BR or 6mmDasher or 6mmBRX. But am not all that versed on 6mm and am wondering if there are better choices in 6mm for 600/1000yd shooting? What's your opinion and why? Thanks for your input.

If you are going to shoot F-Open from 600 to 1000 yards, you would be better inclined to go to a larger caliber. From 300 to 600 yards, the "regular" 6mmBR or one of the improved versions would be GREAT. However, once the wind increases in velocity to a substantial degree, say past 10-12m.p.h., you would be better served with a larger caliber. I can tell you from experience, shooting in blustery conditions at 600 and beyond, a .284 or one of the "improved" versions (Shehane or Walker) is vastly superior to any 6mm out there. I shoot a 6.5 X 284 (nothing to sneeze at) and have noticed my shooting pals who run the 7mm cartridges ALWAYS beat me when the wind is a howlin'!! In Texas, that is the norm, rather than the exception.. Having said that, if you primarily shoot where the wind is rarely a factor, a 6BRX, BRDX or Dasher (even the regular 6mmBR) would do just fine...

I would go brx. Or you can go 6x47 lapua. I have had 6br , the brx and now the 6x47. All are accurate out to 600. Where i shoot, the wind isn't that bad so i can't speak on that. The 6brx is easy to load for and brass is relatively cheap.

I shoot a .240 NMC which is basically the same cartridge as the 6XC. Super accurate and easy to load for...

I have shot the BR, BRX, 6XC, 6.5x284,6SLR and the 284. If I was shooting F class I would have a 284 or a 6.5x284. I think the 284 is the best longrange round I have shot so far. I have shot mine out to a mile and its just flat out accurate!!! Recoil is on the heavier side for some but a brake can take care of that,

If you shooting to 600 the go with a Dasher or 6BRX maybe the XC. But if its a 1000yds or more the 284 is the way to go.

I have 1600rds through mine and it just started to show some throat wear my 6.5x284s would be getting rebarreled by now.

Based on comments here and from others I shoot with I've just ordered my 30" 7mm 1-in-9" barrel from Bartlein. Should have by early spring is all goes well and their schedule holds.

hoier,

I guess it's all in knowing how your round shoots, not the round. If a bigger round was better, everyone would be shooting 338 Lapua or 50 BMG.

While Larry Bartholome, Captain of the USA F-Class team, shoots a 6.5-284 in team competition, when he's shooting a match on his own, he's just as likely to be behind a 6BR or 6BR improved rifle. Larry writes:

"The reason I shoot a 6.5 most of the time now is that we decided quite some time ago that everyone on the team would shoot the same bullets in the same velocity range to make it easier on the coaches in the World Championships. If I am shooting F-Class at 1k don't count my 6BR out. In fact it has shot the only 20x clean at 1k that I know of. The BR flat out just shoots little knots. If I had to have one caliber for all my long range shooting that would be it."

A friend, Bob Crone was on the US team at the time, they dropped the 6.5 x 284 because of barrel life.

The .243 win can push a 115g bullet 3000 fps pretty easy, that is getting ballistics up there with the 6.5's and with less felt recoil and dare I say just as good accuracy! I find the 6slr very intriguing it appears to have almost the velocity as a .243 with some better barrel life with a longer neck and 30 degree shoulder! I'm definitely gonna give it a try.

AR Shooter, you started by asking about the 6's, and ended up with a 7. Oh ye of little faith. I built a .308 FTR rifle in the middle of last year, by shooting it, slowing down and paying way more attention to conditions, my Benchrest shooting has gotten alot more accurate. My 6MM of choice is a 6MM Competition Match. If I did not own 3 of them, I'd be shooting a Dasher. I bought a 6BR ready to go off this site, last month, heard it was the deal of the month. After getting it and looking it over, I'd have to agree. May have to shoot this 6BR. ;D In the right hands, at 1000 yards F/Class it could be a winner.

I know all the big dogs shoot 7s and the USA team shoots 7s. I believe Shiraz shoots a 30. I would start with what the successful shooters are shooting. And I think the reason the they aren't shooting 338s because muzzle brakes aren't allowed. I know I'm not tough enough to shoot a 338 without a brake.
