which .30cal for long range

hi all, just wondering if i could get some advice on a long range 30 cal rifle, i currently have a remington 700 pss in 308 but i want something with abit more range on it im tossing up between either a 300wsm or a 300 win mag but not sure which one to go with or if i should choose something else. also is it feasable to get my remington re done to one of these calibres or should i trade it in for another rifle. i will be using it for long shots on goats, deer and pigs.

How long of a shot are you looking for that the 308 won't work for you?

if you are going to redo the action, i'm assuming that it is a short action--a .300 win wont work--you need a long action for that. a short action might work for a .300wsm but you will be limited on how far out you can seat your bullets and you will need a bolt with a bigger face to accept the .535 diameter base. you might as well go with a custom receiver--by the time you figure in labor costs to rework a rem 700, its not that far off price wise from a custom receiver

Either of the 300 mag's you mention would work. Your short action could be used, just as a single shot. Might need to remove the bolt stop to load the larger 300's. Good luck.

Thanks fo all the advice and knowledge on this topic.
i spoke to a local gun smith and he said i should re consider and keep the 308 as he said that it is good for 800m kills in the right hands as i only use it for goats pigs and deer and he's only suggestion was to get a more comfortable tactical stock. ive been looking at the hs precision tactical stocks and i think i might upgrade to one of them as ive been told there quite good quality and very comfortable.

I think this is a good call. I used to shoot 300WM a lot but don’t enjoy sitting behind it all day long working loads like I did when I was younger. With today’s choices, I can do the same things I did 30 years ago but with smaller bullets and less punishment. Good luck and maybe you can let us know how it turns out when it is finished.
