which 25 caliber cartridge???

Stop thinking only of max speed. Accuracy, ease of loading and all the rest is most important. Sierra uses the 250 Ackley as their 25 caliber test mule because it’s the most accurate and easy to work with 25 cal. Cartridge they have found. You WILL like it.

I was probably guilty of straying with my earlier remarks - I didn't see anyone knocking the 257 Wby - just that it needs a long action!:eek:
As far as speed goes, I managed to scrounge-up a 25/300Rem. Ultra Mag case, for which I considered having a reamer made: level full of RL-15, it holds 103.6 Gr. (average of five fills)!:eek: Guess that's why I chickened out (35% more capacity than a 257 Wby.) . . . but, with the current propellant selection, don't think that one wouldn't/couldn''t be FAST!:D RG
 
Seems like i ran imr7828 in my 257stw. I know i was loading them with a lyman dispenser and remember i could go take a break while it was dispensing. No idea on the speed but it was fast.

My personal 250 Ackley was the 'test mule' for R.G. Robinett's .25 cal. 88's. As you can see, they are killer good bullets!

The gun is an honest-to-gawd hunting rig: Stan Ware trued 700, Hart #2 twisted 1:9 and a McMillan Sako Hunter pattern stock. For load work, it carried an older 24X target scope. For field use, it wears a Weaver K6. My grandson used it to harvest his first deer. With the Sierra 75 gr. flat based hollow points, it's bad news on coyotes.

Stan Ware @ SGR Custom Rifles did the action work and chambered the barrel. Stan intentionally had the reamer ground a bit big at the back end to allow using the Lapua 22-250 cases, if need be. As it is, I ended up using Remington brand 250 Savage brass.

Oddly, the Remington cases were leaps and bounds better dimensionally than Winchesters....a tip given to me by the late Dan Hackett. Dan had found the Remington case 'secret' when working with his .25 Hackett cartidge for IBS/NBRSA Hunter competition.

The stock work, pillars and bedding were all done by myself.
 
I went to Texas hunting a few years back. The 26,000 acres was leased to a bunch of guys that all shot 25/06's chambered by a guy there in Texas. This guy used Shilen 12 twist barrels. They said that they shot two loads that I found hard to believe

100g Sierra spt flat base-3600 fps-I witnessed two guys shoot bug holes with their 26" barrels, load was 63g of IMR 7828 with a fed 215 at 3600 fps. No pressure on the Win cases with this load, neck sized the cases. Groups in the high 2's.

Second load was a Sierra 117g flat base, which is a semi point at 3300 fps, 58g of imr 7828, fed 215. max load for my rifle, groups in the .400 area.

Hard for me to believe, but I took a new rifle home and verified the loads that they all shot on my Ohler 35P.

10T barrels could not get near the above loads, barrel from another maker.

FWIW the 250 AI 30-deg is essentially a "25 Creedmoor". I can make a ready-to-reload 250 AI case by simply running a fired 6.5 CM case through my Redding 250 Ackley Improved FL die. For those who argue which is better - 6 or 6.5 Creedmoor - I say meet in the middle, there's a great little 25-cal cartridge there, whatever you choose to call it.

Curiously, the Hodgdon No. 26 manual (1992) has 25-284 data, saying "It is likely more custom rifles have been built in .25-284 than factory or custom rifles in .284 Winchester. ... Of the several wildcats spawned by the .284 Winchester, all except the 6mm, .25 and .338 versions have quietly faded away." How things change!

If you ever stumble on another 700 Classic in 250 Savage, set it aside for me, I'm good for it. But I would never rechamber it.

That is one fine rifle/cartridge combination. My buddy killed a very nice buck with his at 440 yards across a winter wheat field near Brownwood Texas. Sierra 100 gr. I have three 250s, all Ruger M77s, this year the second or third largest whitetail I've killed snuck up on me & I popped him at 85 yards with the Barnes 100 gr TSX.
The 250 is a very decent round in of itself; hope you find your Classic mdl.
