which 25 caliber cartridge???

Just built a 25x47L. I haven't shot any 100 gr bullets yet, but have gotten 3180 with a 115 Berger and RE-16. I picked a load at 3120 and did a seating depth test. The best 3 shot group was .167 at 200 yards.

I would think that a reasonable velocity expectation out of a 100 grain bullet from a 25x47L would be around 3300 fps.

In my 25 Norma Dasher, I got the 100 gr SMK to a little over 3200 fps with H 4895.

Beruisis Be sure to check the length of the Barnes bullet and make sure you get enough twist. I am shooting a 9 twist and in the past had slightly open groups shooting the longer bullets in a 10 twist.

I have a fair amount of experience with the 257IdiotMag (.25/300WSM), & .257 Roberts, Ackley Imp. - if you desire magazine feeding, and all the useful capacity, a short action, "doesn't cut it". That said, I never use the mags anyway, so it's no big deal - I throat my barrels for maximum performance, and use them as single-shot.

As soon the WSM was SAAMI Spec'd, I had Hugh Henriksen make me a 25 cal version - it has never disappointed: it drives 110 Gr. bullets at an [Oehler] measured 3540 FPS.:) Using a safe dose of RL-17, the .257 Ack. Imp. runs the same bullet at 3330 FPS. Both are great mule deer and pronghorn rigs . . . and, the coyotes don't complain much either.

Were I to start from scratch, I'd obtain a Borden Ridgeline (or, pick your favorite action maker's version), which is a mid-length action, "sized to order" for most of the great cartridges which are really too long for a short action, and too short for a long action: 257 Roberts, 7x57, .284, the short action Mags, etc.!;) If speed is the primary goal, a 25/300 Rem. Ultra Mag, or something in that neighborhood could use up a little powder . . . I don't mind burnin' up a huntin' barrel - putting on a new one doesn't take much time, and by the time you wear it out, you've probably enjoyed some decent huntin'!:DRG

Here are more added to the group, since other wildcats have been mentioned:

257s a.jpg

Left to right: 25-6.5x47mm Lapua, 250 Savage A.I., 25-243 Win. A.I., 250 Humdinger, 257 Roberts A.I., 25-284 Win., 25-300 SAUM 35°, 25-300 WSM/257 Idiot Mag., 25/53 SMc. With wildcatting, the possibilities are endless...

I have a 25-284 in a featherweight bbl on a SA M70. Very sweet shooting, accurate rifle. I have standard Hornady dies for it too. That’s what I’d choose.

What’s the benefit of a medium action over the long action?

Good question.:D I do not know/have an answer - only that a short action is too short - my current position is from a cosmetic/hair-splitting perspective. Were I to purchase a new action, for any of the mid-length cartridges mentioned and the current crop of mid-length actions were not available, I would opt for a long action. - even for a 300WSM, a way better choice than a short action . . . well, from the perspective of getting the V the cartridge has to offer! Yep, I do have long action "short mags" . . . :D RG

Its going to be many years before i ever get into a 25cal again if i ever do. Built a 257wby, a 257stw and a 250sav ai and the bullet selection made me regret it every day

Yea. But my 257stw is a blast hunting pushing a 100gr Barnes xxx 3900fps. And BIB makes a pretty good 110gr bullet that I would chamber around if I was building a new .25 cal.

Would you share some details on your rifle and loads? Barlow

You are being kind. Shi**y mood this morning with a cold but, I'm calling that claim of 3500fps total BS. I could be proven wrong but, I doubt it.

Now you guys have me rethinking that beautiful Weatherby MK5 Deluxe in 257 WM!
I've killed a few head with my old Kleinguenther 257 WM 25".

Great pic! Thanks. Food for thought!

Bolt face may be a problem, but my new 25 SAUM Imp is running the 115 VLDS at a bit over 3200 fps on the low node..
A doe at 200 yards went about 40 yards double lunged, hit ribs going in and out, and made a internal mess

Busted a couple big does this year with my 257 Wby. The first was with the 115 Berger, she dropped in her tracks. That bullet made a loud crack when it busted her shoulder, not a good idea to shoot for the shoulder when you’re trying to fill the freezer!!
Later in the season, I switched to the 115 grain Ballistic Tip. Shot another big doe, this one behind the front leg. Blew up everything in the chest cavity, but she still managed to stumble about 30 yards.
You really don’t need all of the power that the big 257 offers, but it sure is cool shooting a lazer !

Any wildcat. Considering the 25 creed but looking at options.
Wondering about a 25/6.5 Rem Mag.???
You realize the 250 Savage is the 25 Creed! The fastest is 257 Weatherby. The most credible is the 25/06 for your Ruger. If you can go 25/06 40 degree you'll be close to 257wby without the problems of the belted case and Lapua brass.

Not scientifically measured - used RL-15, which was handy, and struck 'em off level full - here are some fired case capacities for your perusal:
1) 250/3000 Sav. = 42.4 Gr.
2) 25x47 Lapua = 43.6 Gr.
3)30x47 HBR (Lapua cloned this case, and necked it down to 6.5:eek:) = 44.5 Gr.
4) 25 LongNecker (250/3000 Ack. Imp. with 6mm re. length neck) = 46.7 Gr.
5) 257 Roberts Ackley Imp. 40 Deg. - 58.4 GR.
6) just for the hell of ito_O - 6.5x284 = 61.4 Gr.
7) 257IdiotMag (25/300WSM) 71.1 Gr.
8) 257 Weatherby Mag. = 76.3 Gr.
Don't have 25/06, or, 25/06 Ack. Imp, both of which are great too!;) Nor, do I have a 25/300 Rem. Ultra Mag, which would be really BIG! Both the 25x47 and 250/3000- Ack. Imp. produce extreme precision - good enough to win/place/show in NBRSA Hunter Class and VfS tournaments.

In my old age, I have reverted to my youthful wants - for hunting, more horsepower than required! My all-time favorite, though, remains the 257 Ac. Imp. :D For the polymer tipped 100 Gr., and the longer/heavier (110-115 Gr.) HPBT type bullets, though a traditional 1:10" probably will not disappoint, I strongly recommend you opt for a 1:9" twist barrel - that'll dot the I's and cross the T's!

Merry Christmas! :)RG
