Which 2 stage trigger?

Mark,
FYI
Thanks!!! What is the over travel like on the Mod 22? I notice there's no adjustment for it which makes me want to go in a different direction, but I otherwise really like the way that trigger is designed. If there's no, or practically no perceivable trigger movement once the sear breaks, then I think I'd be fine with no OT adjustment. Otherwise, I'd probably have to go with a T7T.

It's a few years since I used the trigger, I couldn't get the release weight down to a level I was happy with, could have been the fact that it was fitted to an RPA Quadlite which uses a very heavy firing pin spring and loads the whole system. I replaced it with a Jewell. So, I'm going from memory here, but overtravel was never an issue and I don't like movement once the sear has tripped, the 22 was fine with regards to that. I think it must have been adjusted with the 2nd stage screw.

I've just got a Sidhe trigger for a new rifle and that doesn't have any overtravel adjustment but the blurb that comes with the trigger states it has no overtravel. There are adjustments only for pull weight and sear engagement. I've not received the barrelled action yet so can't try the trigger properly, but just having it in hand there seems to be a hesitation when the sear releases and then further pressure allows the blade to continue moving back before releasing allows the re-set. Maybe that hesitation is what they regard as no overtravel and is just a function of the the trigger design, although I would be happier if a dedicated overtravel adjustment screw was fitted. As others have said here, the B & A doesn't have overtravel adjustment either so it must be down to the modern designs I guess. I have a spare Jewel in case I can't get on with the Sidhe.

Good luck with your trigger quest!

My understanding was that the B&A doesn't have an OT adjustment, but the trigger still has a noticeable amount of travel after the sear breaks. I understand the logic behind that, but I wouldn't like it at all.

The more I look at the Mod 22 design, the more confused I get about exactly how it works. Seems like the springs for the 1st and 2nd stage interact with each other, which is fine. The part I'm doing mental gymnastics over is more from a safety perspective. Once its adjusted, it seems like only the 2nd stage spring is pushing the 2nd lever down to maintain the sear engagement. The 1st stage spring has to also be overcome for the trigger to move the 2nd lever, but if the rifle gets jarred, only the 2nd stage spring is keeping the sear engaged, and that 2nd stage spring is likely going to be set much lighter than the first stage. Ideally, that will never mater because it does have a safety, and a rifle should not be jarred like that anyway, but I'm not really sure I'm willing to go that route.

Ugh....

Mine doesn't have a safety although there were available with a safety lever. I get what you are saying, but the second stage spring has to be heavier than first in order for you to be able to hold the trigger back against the second stage stop and still have the additional load to pull through. These were designed to be able to hold 3.3lbs approx, if needed. If it's adjusted correctly the trigger should return to full sear engagement if pressure is released but the rifle is not fired. That doesn't address what happens if the rifle is jarred but that applies to any rifle that is cocked. It's up to the user to adjust sear engagement to suit their intended use and appropriate safety considerations.
