Where is all the powder?

Sorry to disagree with you Jon. But, it is the hoarders, and there's really nothing mysterious about it. When any of those dealers you just mentioned gets a new shipment in and it disappears within a couple of hours, who do you think is buying it all.....Barak, Michelle, and Hillary? Yes, Obama and the Democrats are to blame for maintaining the hysteria, but we are our own worst greedy enemies. It really pisses me off when I see so many classified ads of the jackasses selling 10 boxes of bullets or 5 cans of powder that they didn't need to buy in the first place.

Nothing but impulsive stupidity. ..... 1 1/2 years of it thus far!

X2, couldn't agree more.

Jon, you probably use Beikirchs being near Rochester. If not you should, I got 8lb of Varget from their Pa location since I live near the border. They had a good selection of powders on the shelf but no Varget. I was on a list for a month but it came through. Ron

How much Varget do you need? I've got more than I can shoot in a lifetime.

I think its paid gubberment agents waiting to buy all the 22's.

I think it's a combination of things but hoarders are a BIG part of it. I live near a Gander Mountain in Houston, TX. They get 22 rimfire ammo every week on the same day. An hour before the store opens, people are lined up to get it and they buy the maximum amount that the store will sell them. A clerk at the store told me its the same people every week. They don't want to keep selling all the ammo to the same people but they have no choice. It's the same with powder and everything else. Everyone is scared so they buy as much as they possibly can. This is not an issue that is going away, ever. The liberal government is fighting as hard as they can to get rid of guns and sadly, they have the votes to stay in office. Not to be negative, but I predicted years ago that we will NEVER have another republican president and I stand behind that.

I just picked up 6 one pound jugs of H1000. I have a two year supply of primers and powder, but less than one year's supply of bullets.
I NEED 105 AMAX BULLETS.

I know one of powder dealers that does the gun shows. They told me that the IMR is coming in regularly and the Hodgdon is still hard to get. They don't carry any VV powders. The last gun show they abunch of IMR good powders. Some RL 15,22,50, and AR comp. For the pistol powders they can't get any Bullseye, Unique, ETC.

The only powder I actually need right now is a pound of H110 and I will be good to go for a season or two. I see most powders pretty regular now at gun shows but I am not willing to pay 36 for a pound of powder that still sells for 21 when actually available.

The one dealer at the show sells it for 30 dollars a pound(no tax). My range sells the powders for 26-27 per pound.

I believe the AR market has come back to pre crazyness level. There is 223/5.56 ammo all the the place down here.

I found a few tons of powder. Do not understand the gov and their ability to waste components. Apparently they have a billion dollars of ammo they need to destroy.

Same scenario where I live. Went into a Sportsman's Warehouse the other day, saw a long line of folks sitting in their folding chairs inside the store. Asked one of the employees what was going on. Said it was folks waiting on 22 ammo that was going to be put on the shelves and they usually see the same folks every week.

This store puts their stock of 22 ammo out around 6PM so folks (most folks) can stop by on their way home from work to check for it and have a shot at getting some.

I'm actually seeing a slow but steady increase in powder availibility at my LGS's . I'm still paying an average of $29/lb. but at least there is a good variety of the more popular powders (Varg and R15 are still scarce, but I actually saw 5# of R15 in stock at my local Bass Pro). I think were seeing light at the end of the powder hoarding/shortage tunnel ?

Seems simple enough to pick random stocking times (unless the stocking clerk is sending out notices). But then again, in the bigger moneygrabbing scheme, what manager really cares as long as it moves out the door as fast as possible.

it is in fact people hoarding the powder and primers.i have recently bought 2# of varget and they had at least 50#s left. the next day it was gone. there is plenty for sale at gun broker for double the price! that is where the powder is.a few people with a little cash buying all they can get, then trying to double or triple their money.nice guys! stop blaming the government for all the problems, they arent the ones trying to #%&* you. as for the guy talking about the lead smelting plaant shutting down, the truth is they shut down the virgin lead ore smelting plant in missouri.i grew up down the street from this plant(doe run) and called an old buddy that works there. they are investing a bunch of money into the several recycle smelters there and are increasing production, all virgin ore is being smelted at doe run in south america.a final note, all lead used in ammo manufacturing is from recycled lead and has been this way for many years. the shut down of the missouri ore plant has no effect on ammo and the reinvestment into the plants recycled lead production will actually help the bullet producers.

several on line sites use "old prices" for item not in stock.....
they do not list a new price till they have it in stock...it makes it look bad for the guy that actually has inventory.
i have not seen significant powder price increases from my wholesalers.

I also find it kind of funny that several vendors have announced that the price of powder has increased for them so they upped the price 30-50% on varying powders yet you can still find sites that sell it at the old price but they rarely have any in stock. I understand supply and demand but when places are announcing an increase while other stores just keep selling it as it comes in I tend to think gouging for the sake of making money and trying to make it seem official and not their choice. The capitalist in me says let them make the money off of those that need the powder but the pissed off kid in me says that's not right.

Homeland Security has the right to buy 85%-95% of all powder produced and they are do just that and are storing it at Ft Drum N.Y. This came from the Alliant Powder partner with Federal Ammo. The president of the N.H. Sporstman assn. Informed all of the Zone #1 skeet shooters about this last month. Obama couldn't get all the gun control he wanted so he has backed used the back door using his power to keep the shooter from buying powder and lead. Call your congressman and stop this attack on our 2nd Amendment Rights.

right and how are the commercial and government ammo contracts being filled if homeland security is buying 85-95% of the PRODUCED POWDER..
