Where has the throat gone?

Hey guys,
I have a question for you. I was working on my 300 win mag last night trying to determine the seating length for some Berger 190 VLD's when I found that seating to the lands would involve seating the bullet 15 thousandths on the outside of the case. This is the first rifle that I have shot the throat out of, what do I do now? I do not have the $$ for a new Barrel now, and I would like to shoot the gun through at least this hunting season. Would you all just seat the bullet back further in the 300's short neck to ensure good grip or keep them out as long as possiable.
Thanks,
Croberts

I can't say that I will reconmend you use them for hunting, tho, some folks have had great results in doing so. But it is an alternative.

If your rifle will shoot them backed off, then back em off for now, and set the barrel back later...... or buy a new barrel later..
You must shoot that rifle a lot.......

Preacher,
Well I don't think that I have shot it that much. But after thinking about it I am pretty sure that it has been nearly 800 rounds, which is not great but ok for a 300 I guess. I have tried to take care of it, but the throat was really long to start with. A feature that newer remingtons are born with here lately.
Oh well it was fun.

You can set the barrel back for about $150. If you seat bullets out just far enough to feed thru the magazine, you are gonna have some jump anyhow. And sometimes a long jump can be very accurate.

Check the rifling infront of the throat. Usually if the throat is shot out as bad as you describe the rifling in the first 8-12 inches is so badly eroaded it is not worth setting the barrel back.
For a real high quality barrel you are looking at a $275.00 to $350.00 investment and another $150 to $250.00 for the chambering.

Remember you get what you pay for if you go low end.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the advice. I talked to my gunsmith today and he said that there would not be enough barrel to torque, factory remington) so I guess that will be next money pit. Loks like time to shhot the dog out of it.
Thanks,
Croberts

Just buy another gun... probably cheaper and if you were happy with a factory throat anyway...

a 700 action is desirable if you wanted to sell the rifle to recoup costs.
