Where do I start?

Some of you may be able to tell from my user name that I'm in the Army. Ever since I've seen the President's Hundred tab I've wanted it. I currently shoot some pretty informal F-class and service rifle high power stuff but no match rifle yet. From what I've read online a trip to Camp Perry is in order to compete for this honor, I may be wrong though. What I'm really trying to get here is the information and understanding of what I need to do in order to get that honor of wearing that tab.

What equipment do I need? What shooting discipline and what distances? Where will I need to go? I really have no idea where to start with this and I'm hoping somebody can point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance,

Wayne

Start here..........

If you've never been to Camp Perry," It's a HUMBLING EXPERIENCE ". I shot next to a Marine once who put a 10 shot rapid fire string, ( standing to sitting ) 70 seconds, with a magazine change ) with a strong cross wind into the X ring that could be covered with a Silver Dollar. The camaraderie is Exceptional, the living condition,s if the huts are still there, are Austere (LOL). Shooting there is truly a Memorable experience. Good Luck.................

Here is some additional information that was not covered in Major Miller's brief article.

The legal rifles for the P100 match are: M-1 Garand (30-06 or 308 Win), M-14 or M1A (308 Win.) or the M-16 or AR-15 in .223 Rem.

Rifles must conform to Army/CMP rules, which allow modifications such as National Match type sights with hooded apertures, finer elevation and windage adjustments (1/2 MOA or 1/4 MOA), a match quality heavy barrel, glass bedding (M-1, M-14, M1A), free-float tube for forend (AR-15, must fit under standard handguards), additional weight to dampen recoil, 2 stage match triggers, etc, etc, etc.

In the rifle version of the P100 match you may use hand-loaded ammo, commercial ammo or military ammo (SS-109 equivalent at 600 yds).

The majority of shooters currently use AR-15 variants, with 1 in 8 inch or faster twist barrels to shoot 80 grain or heavier bullets at 600 yds. 200 and 300 yds are usually fired with 69 grain or 77 grain bullets.

Good luck with your quest for the President's 100 badge.

The course of fire for the P-100 is:
10 rounds standing slow fire in 10 minutes at 200 yards
10 rounds rapid prone from standing with reaload in 70 seconds at 300 yards
10 rounds slow prone in 10 minutes at 600 yards

If you go to Perry to shoot this, be sure to shoot the EIC then next day which is how you earn the Distiguished Riflemans Badge. Course of fire is simular, but there is also a rapid sitting from standing in 60 seconds at 200 yards and 20 shots slow prone at 600.

go to the CMP webpage and order a Cmp Rifle rulebook, lots of other info on that sight, also go to white oak arms , Byron W Davis DR601
